New Chef Means a New Menu at Jose Pistola’s

Posted by Foobooz on April 19th, 2013

Adan Trinidad

Casey Parker and Joe Gunn’s Jose Pistola’s has been a great place for beer since it opened. But the food has definitely had its ups and downs. But with hiring of Adán Trinidad, food will be one more reason to head to the Center City bar. Trinidad has most recently working and creating menus for Richard Sandoval Restaurants. He is known to Philadelphians for his time as chef de cuisine at Fish and his stint at Stephen Starr’s El Vez.

Trinidad has just rolled out a new menu which is much much more aggressive than some of its past efforts. The Mexican menu features multiple types of guacamole and salsa plus some exciting ceviche, queso fundido and sopes. Of special note is the Random section of the menu which includes mole meatballs and carnitas steamed buns.

Chef Elijah Milligan continues to put his mark on the menu at Stateside. Late, last week Milligan rolled out his mid-Spring main menu. Among the items that caught our eye; seared foie gras with whiskey French toast, grilled grapes and ice wine vinegar; veal sweetbreads and  Stateside Stew, a stew of rotating house-made sausage, fresh fish and shellfish  plus vegetables.

News From Le Bec Fin: New Menus And A Step Back In Time

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 4th, 2013

If Le Bec Fin became Le Bec 2.0 on the day that Nicolas Fanucci took it over from Georges Perrier and brought it back to the good old days of elegance and opulence that marked its most defining era, then what do we call it now? Is it Le Bec 2.5 because chef Walter Abrams has been shown the door (Steve Eckerd has been standing as interim chef de cuisine ever since) and a new exec has yet to be found? Will it be Le Bec 3.0 when a new big hat is chosen to step behind the stoves?

Or, now that it has been announced that Fanucci has decided to allow a la carte ordering again (the thing that some would argue precipitated the fall of the original Le Bec), do we call it Le Bec 1.5?

Oh, and did we mention the new brunch menu?

Activity has been amping up at Fitler Dining Room. The new restaurant from the crew behind Pub & Kitchen will open to the public this Thursday, February 21st.

The thirty-two seat restaurant features an open kitchen, subway tiled walls, handsome leather banquette and welcoming sofa. A four-seat  bar faces chef Robert Marzinsky’s open kitchen. Marzinsky has been the chef de cuisine at P&K’s other fine dining sibling, Diving Horse in Avalon, NJ. Marzinsky was also on the opening staff of Stateside and has worked at Pub & Kitchen. Fitler Dining Room’s menu will feature an American bistro concept balanced between land and sea. Appetizers run from $8 to $14 with entrees coming in between $18 and $26.

Fitler Dining Room will initially be open for dinners only, with brunch being added down the line.

Corner Foodery in Pictures (and the Menu Too)

Posted by Foobooz on February 7th, 2013

The Corner Foodery opened today at 1710 Sansom Street. Tony Rim was behind the counter and John Taus was in the kitchen when we stopped by  to take a look and lunch on  a porchetta sandwich. Like all the Foodery locations, beer is a big part of the operation with coolers galore lining one wall. At the back of Corner Foodery is a deli counter where customers can order a sandwich for eat-in or takeout. There are also six beers available on tap for those staying. The other half of the building is a restaurant filled with two-tops, booths and a communal table. Overall 40 people can sit comfortably in the restaurant side.

The menu is made up of charcuterie and specialty sandwiches plus sides. Hours will have the business open to 10 p.m. weekdays and later on weekends.

Rembrandt’s Comeback

Posted by Alex Tewfik on January 3rd, 2013

Rembrandt’s in Fairmount is hoping to keep up with Fairmount’s recent restaurant renaissance. Long a neighborhood institution, the restaurant has brought in some new guns to overhaul the menu.

A few months ago, Chef Nick Cassidy of Buddakan came to Rembrandt’s to help with the revitalization process. Gradually, over the past few months, he’s put together a comfortable menu with good portions and fair value. Rembrandt’s is closed today in preparation for the full menu to go live tomorrow, Friday, January 4th.

For the sneak peak…

Ants Pants Launches Dinner

Posted by Foobooz on December 6th, 2012

Ants Pants Cafe at 2212 South Street is adding dinner service, starting tonight. It’s a full menu of small plates, salads, sandwiches and larger plates. A departure for the Australian themed cafe that until now has been known for bacon stacks and Violet Crumble milkshakes. We’re intrigued to try the Aussie Burger with grilled pineapple, roasted beets and an over medium egg.

Peter McAndrews Takes Over Bridgid’s Kitchen

Posted by Alex Tewfik on December 6th, 2012

Bridgid’s was one of our first steps in the right direction when it came to beer in Philadelphia. The homely bistro was a Belgian beer haven before Monk’s, The Belgian Cafe, or anyone ever uttered the term gastropub. It was there before the boom, but then sort of got lost in the vast assemblage of craft beer bars Philly is now bursting at the seams with. Their food was neither here nor there—and when competing with the likes of those other establishments, good food is vital.

So they decided to step up. Peter McAndrews (Modo Mio, Monsu, Paesano’s, Popolino, and La Porta) is taking the helm behind the stoves, and he’s turning the kitchen around. For a restaurant that prided itself with European-influenced American food, it seemed to lack continuity—the old menu featured “Escargot Au Pernod” right above “Southwest Chicken Rolls”. Consistency and identity are two absolute requisites in restaurants, and Bridgid’s had it with beer, just not so much on the other end.

Bottle Bar East Introduces Food Menu

Posted by Amanda Shulman on November 16th, 2012

Bottle Bar East has launched its full food menu, so now you have something to soak up and pair with their delicious craft beers. The menu consists of soups and stews, pickles, grilled sandwiches, and selections of meats and cheeses.

These aren’t any flimsy bar snacks either, we’re talking the real deal, like a Grilled Philly Cuban with prosciutto cotto, prosciutto parma, pecorino crottonese, roasted pepper and pickles, cheese selections from around the world and a pickle menu that’ll impress, consisting of caramelized crimini onions, cumin mushrooms, and spicy green beans, just to name a few. They also feature a “local” section within their sandwiches, with all the ingredients hailing from within 168 miles.
