Han Dynasty Adding Another Location

Posted by Foobooz on March 22nd, 2012

Han Chiang from Han Dynasty already has a lot of things going for him. He’s got 4 locations of his crazy-popular (and crazy-good) namesake restaurant. He’s got a reputation for being a loud, outspoken, F-bomb dropping sonofabitch in a town that just considers that sort of behavior charmingly quirky. He had a rap song written in his honor.

And now he’s going to have a fancy, brand-new and shiny home for his next Han Dynasty location because, as Eater Philly reports, he just signed the paperwork for the space at 38th and Market that, until very recently, was home to Daniel Stern’s MidAtlantic.

The new location will join Han’s growing empire of restaurants in Manayunk, Royersford, Exton and Old City. No word yet on an opening date, but I bet I can guess what’s going to be on the menu…

Quick Bites: Culinary Incubator, Arepas from a Truck, the End of MidAtlantic

Posted by Foobooz on January 24th, 2012

The Center for Culinary Enterprises is under construction in West Philadelphia. When it opens in July the space at 48th and Spruce will include licensed commercial kitchens for culinary entrepreneurs, a multimedia learning center and three retail spaces. One of those spaces will be Louie’s BBQ, a  full service restaurant with a youth training program. [Naked Philly]

Midtown Lunch stumbles upon the recently opened Delicias food truck in University City. The Venezuelan run truck features arepas and empanadas. [Midtown Lunch]

Maui’s Dog House has opened in the Bellevue food court. The original Maui’s is located in Wildwood, New Jersey. [Meal Ticket]

Daniel Stern’s MidAtlantic is closing on February 24th. The restaurant opened in October, 2009. The landlord is already showing the space to other potential operators. [The Insider]

A landlord dispute has Artisan Boulanger moving off of Passyunk Avenue. On the good side, the new location at 1218 Mifflin Street will be much bigger. [Meal Ticket]

Free Dogs, New Dogs, Artsy Dogs and the Top 5 Wieners In Love City

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 20th, 2011

Hot dogs are having a moment.

In case you don’t already have it marked in red on your calendar, this Saturday is National Hot Dog Day–the one day of the year set aside by wiser, fatter men than me for the appreciation and glorification of that most American of tube-shaped meats. And since Philly is currently ranked as the 6th most wiener-ific city in America (an honor received for our consumption-by-volume, coming in just behind Chicago but well ahead of Harrisburg/Scranton–the only other Pennsylvania area to make the top 10), you just know there are going to be celebrations.

First, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be making a special stop in Philly. Why special? Because this ain’t the regular old Wienermobile, but the “first-ever, special edition Wienermobile Food Truck.” Yes, for the first time in the history of driveable tubesteaks, the Wienermobile will be dispensing actual hot dogs–1,000 of them, courtesy of Oscar Mayer and Hawk Krall, the local artist, food writer and all-around hot dog fanatic. Krall designed the dogs himself (well, the toppings, anyway) and he and the Wiener Truck will be down at Penn Square TODAY starting at 11:30.

Greatest Hits and What You Missed: Shrimp and Grits, Root Beer and Ice Cream, Hot Dogs and Beer, and 10 Chefs On Why You Can’t Grill For S#!t

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 1st, 2011

That picture above (of the shrimp grits at Relish) was my favorite snap of the week–the kind of thing that made me want to immediately get in the car, head out to West Oak Lane and eat seven or eight bowls of it. My favorite story? The one about Victory Brewing finally bottling their artisan root beer (perfect for bourbon-spiked root beer floats) and selling their own beer-inspired ice cream. The best deal of the past week? Daniel Stern losing his mind and almost giving away Smokehouse Dogs and pints of Narragansett Lager at MidAtlantic. And the most useful thing we came up with? Grilling advice from 10 of the best chefs in the city (including Daniel Stern, who may be nuts but does know a thing or two about working a grill).

And you know what? That wasn’t even half of what we had going on this week on Foobooz. Here’s some of the other good stuff you might’ve missed:

Gemelli Opens In Manayunk And yeah, we’ve got the menu and the pictures
Ex-Horizons Owners Promise to Make Vegetables Sexy Frankly, I already find kale quite alluring
A. Kitchen Opens the Doors And yeah, we’ve got the menu and the pictures
Should Servers Get Paid Sick Days? Or would you rather them just sneeze right on your food?
Vendy Awards Nominations Announced Philly’s street food fans go bonkers
Ranstead Room Unveils Its Summer Cocktails And yeah, we’ve got the menu. No pictures this time, though, so just go see it for yourself, Drunky

Happy 4th of July, everyone. See you all back here on Tuesday.

Daniel Stern Has Lost His Marbles, Offers What Is Officially The Most Ridiculous Dining Deal Of The Summer

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on July 1st, 2011

Went to Daniel Stern’s MidAtlantic for the first time in a very long time last night. Lots of changes since the early days, but one menu item that I am very happy to report remains: Stern’s awesome Smokehouse Dog, the same one that Rick Nichols deemed “magnificent” in this 2009 article. It’s a flavor-packed combination of beef neck and shoulder, spiced up and mixed with beef kidney fat before being ground and stuffed into a natural sheep casing. Read the rest of this entry »

Farmers’ Feast at MidAtlantic

Posted by Foobooz on November 9th, 2010

This Thursday chef Daniel Stern is  pairing up with members of Blooming Glen and Birchrun Hills Farm as well as Stoudts Brewery for a Farmers’ Feast dinner at MidAtlantic. The 4-course, $45 dinner will feature the local farms and beers and sounds pretty tasty, especially the special firkin of Fat Dog Stout infused with pomegranate.

University City’s MidAtlantic adds rotisserie dishes for fall and since it is also the restaurant’s one-year anniversary, there are $1 drafts with the purchase of an entree all month.

Daniel Stern Has a New Culinary Director

Posted by Foobooz on May 3rd, 2010

Daniel Stern just tweeted that he is excited that Bryan Sikora (Talula’s Table, Django) is joining his team as culinary director. Stern, who owns MidAtlantic and R2L states that Sikora’s first stop will be MidAtlantic.

Interesting timing as the announcement comes on the heels of Craig LaBan’s piece on Sikora and ex-wife Aimee Olexy. Also, this Sunday R2L is slated to be reviewed by Craig LaBan.

MidAtlantic Misses

Posted by Foobooz on February 16th, 2010

midatlantic

Craig LaBan only wishes he could like MidAtlantic the restaurant as much as he likes MidAtlantic the concept. But too many gaffes leave that as an impossibility.

But rarely have I seen such a fantastic idea stumble critically across the finish line over a needless array of elemental cooking gaffes, from a recurring salt problem to sloppy plating and dishes that taste like concepts still in the works.

What is the point of making such tasty beef hot dogs, coarse-ground and aromatic with fennel and clove, if they’re so awkward to eat? Mine were buried under a mountain of potato chips, pickles, and wads of fermented cabbage so messy, it looked as if it had been plated by a bucket, not a chef.

One Bell – Hit or Miss
