Pennsylvania 6 (PE6) is getting ready to open at 114 South 12th Street on Thursday, April 25th. The American kitchen and bar is being opened by the same team behind Public House, City Tap House and Field House. PE6 is definitely their most ambitious food project to date. Chef Marc Plessis  who was chef de cuisine of Nineteen (XIX) when the restaurant received three bells from Craig LaBan is in charge of the kitchen. Plessis was born in France and moved to the US at a young age and attended the New England Culinary Institute. He has also cooked in New Orleans, Atlanta and Chicageo.

The two-floor bar with twenty tap lines is opening on Tuesday, April 23rd. The opening night blowout will feature a tap list to make all the beer geeks scream and complementary food from chef Paul Martin’s kitchen.

We have to admit, this one excites us.

What are Safran and Turney Planning for 13th and Locust?

Posted by Foobooz on April 9th, 2013

Marcie Turney and partner Valerie Safran are working away at overhauling the two spaces they acquired in the Independent Hotel at 13th and Locust. Turney posted the above photo of an old German beer garden table that she purchased for the outdoor space between the former Fish and Rhino Bar. Perhaps this is a clue to what is to come? Could Turney and Safran be giving 13th Street the wursthaus that Jose Garces couldn’t? Time will tell. What we do know is, Lolita will be moving into the Locust Street space temporarily, as the 13th Street power couple renovate the ten-year old Lolita location and reopen it this summer with a new menu and liquor license.

We also know that the bigger space with the 13th Street entrance is getting its kitchen blown out. So there will be an even bigger open kitchen and a smaller bar area.

Where We’re Eating: El Vez May Be the Most Fun Restaurant in Town

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on April 8th, 2013

El Vez 2

Because I was tired of hearing overeducated food types in Philadelphia talk a ton of smack about Stephen Starr’s always-packed Mexican joint El Vez, I decided to put the restaurant to the test with a demanding Saturday-night birthday party 10-top, including some fussy suburban eaters and one each of the picky-eater and vegetarian species. We ordered beers. We ordered margaritas. We ordered a wide range of food. And we dropped $40-plus in the photo booth, where, yes, my shirt came off. (Pictures available upon request.) Not a bad plate or drink was served. The server didn’t stumble once. And we made it out the door for under $40 per person. You can hate all you want, haters, but the fact is, El Vez may be the most fun restaurant in town.
