To kick off its Prohibition-themed art and ephemera exhibition, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction is partnering with the National Constitution Center to host a flapper-icious First Friday fete this evening from 6-8pm. Throughout the month, the edgy-yet-retro clothing and gift apothecary/boutique will display graphic illustrations that depict famous Philly Prohibition characters by local artist Hank Krall, as well as artifacts from the era. It’s Called “Art in the Age of Prohibition.” Get it?
Through the exhibition’s run, the store will also program lectures and workshops on homebrewing, Prohibition cocktails and spirits production. As for tonight, we couldn’t get any confirmation on the drink list, but every time we’ve been to an Art in the Age reception, there’s been a bartender mixing esoteric concoctions with the company’s three historically-inspired liquor brands: Root, Snap and Rhuby. We’re guessing that, tonight, they’ll probably be adding Sage to the mix(ers) as well.

On Thursday, October 18th, the National Constitution Center is throwing it back to the (somewhat) dry days of the 1920′s with the Bootleggers Ball to celebrate the opening of their new exhibition entitled American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition.
Prepare to be transported back to the Roaring 20′s with a swanky speakeasy style party held in the Center’s Grand Hall Lobby. The night will be made complete with Jazz music, Lindy Hop and Charleston lessons, and some fun themed photo opps . Food and plenty of drinks will be served. To get into spirit, they’ll be serving up lots of whiskey specials as well as pre-prohibition lager. The Bootlegger’s Ball includes exclusive early access to the exhibit, so you can sip some booze while exploring the exhibit and become extremely thankful for the glass in your hand … irony in the sweetest form, and we love it.
