Philadelphia music icon Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson announced that Hybird, his and Stephen Starr’s new restaurant, will be opening this Saturday, May 18, in New York City’s Chelsea Market. The gourmet fast food restaurant will feature Questlove’s famous “Love’s Drumsticks,” truffled egg dumplings, tom yum cupcakes, and watermelon-jalapeño “Love Slush,” among other things.
Few things are more Philly than Questlove and Starr, so its a shame this place isn’t opening locally. But it is worth noting that Questlove recently followed a number of Philadelphia food accounts on twitter, so maybe Questlove is planning on bringing Hybird to Philly soon.

There’s been a persistent rumor running through the restaurant community that Jennifer Carroll‘s NYC project, Concrete Blonde, has fallen apart and that she has come back to Philadelphia. We’ve heard about her consulting, helping out beleaguered bakers, and hanging out all over town. What we didn’t have was any concrete proof (concrete, get it?) that she was back in any kind of permanent way. Until now.
This is the profile page for Jennifer Carroll’s twitter account. See down there in the last line? Where it says “Philly”?
Up until recently, that used to say “Philly / New York”. But not anymore.
Welcome home, Jen.
UPDATE: Grub Street gets word directly from Jennifer Carroll that her Concrete Blonde project in West Village is dead.

Reservations are being accepted via rsvp@momofuku.com.
Sounds like a bargain. And hey, we’re cool with sharing Zahav for a night as long as that means David Chang and Momofuku come down to Philadelphia for a night.
Deal?

Philly has been luring Manhattanites away from the Big Apple for years. Now we’re taking its chefs—and concepts—as well.
For decades, Manhattan has been a kind of protected game preserve for chefs and foodies, a rarified environment where restaurateurs with big names could lure in enough of the monied trade to make the cripplingly high rents and off-the-charts food costs work with $300 tasting menus and $18 cheeseburgers. And because the biggest names in the game opened there, the best crews flocked to them. The best suppliers. It was a system that worked only because every piece of it depended on the willing suspension of all good sense, and a kind of universal acceptance by the people of Manhattan that they were living (and dining) in the greatest food city on earth.

In addition to talking hotels, Stephen Starr is also expanding his presence in New York. Starr tells the New York Times that he is planning to open an El Vez in Battery Park City.
New York’s El Vez, which will be in the Goldman-Sachs building will be bigger than the Philadelphia location with more than 200 seats. If all goes according to plan, Starr aims to open in late 2013.

Jim Caiola and David Salama who own Beau Monde and L’Etage in Philadelphia are now going to be running New York City’s Tavern on the Green. The team submitted a bid to win a twenty year lease on the Central Park landmark back in April and it was highest rated request for proposal received by New York’s Parks & Recreation department.
Katy Sparks will be the executive chef at the new Tavern on the Green. She has worked at The Quilted Giraffe, Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill and Bolo, and Quilty’s where she was chosen as a “Top Ten Best New Chef in America” by Food & Wine Magazine.
Tavern on the Green is anticipated to reopen in the Fall of 2013.

One of New York City’s favorite coffee shops will be opening up two locations in Philadelphia. Joe, which has nine locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, will be setting up shop in Rittenhouse Square at 1845 Walnut Streeet early next year. The second location will be on Drexel’s campus and open later in 2013, possibly in one of the two new buildings on campus set to be complete at that time. Joe’s Rittenhouse space has 1,200 square feet of indoor space and 400 square feet of outdoor terrace space. It will be twice as large as any of the New York stores.
Just in time for their move to Philly, Joe will soon be roasting their own coffee too. Right now they get most of their product from Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea and Ecco Café. Joe runs through 3,000 pounds of coffee a week throughout the chain so they will only be roasting about 300 pounds of their own coffee a week at first.
With our own coffee renaissance in Philadelphia, it’s a good time to be a coffee drinker.

Eater is reporting that Jennifer Carroll and her lawyer received approval to go ahead on her West Village restaurant. So it would really seem that the Top Chef star is really leaving her hometown for New York. We’re more disappointed by this than we would have imagined.
