Potato Week: The Best Fries In Philadelphia

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 13th, 2012

Yay, Potato Week! As our starchy celebrations draw to a close, we have one more big list for you–the results of our research into the realm of that most American(ish) of potato presentations, the french fry.

We had 82 different restaurants under consideration for this list–everything from crowd favorites like Village Whiskey and Hot Diggity to lesser-known (but know less loved) contenders like the long-gone crab fries at Sidecar Bar, the lovely frites at Grace Tavern or those at Eulogy (which had a fiercely committed fan base). Putting our waistlines and cholesterol levels on the line for you, we waded through the possibilities and winnowed everything down to a final list of 10: The best french fries of any variety, in any form, that you’re going to find anywhere in Philadelphia.

Hey, someone’s got to do it, right? This stuff is important. And while we here at Foobooz World HQ are absolutely sure that there isn’t one of you out there who will agree with every inclusion on the list (hell, we don’t even completely agree), there is sure to be something on here for everyone.

Happy Potato Week everyone. And now, on to the list…

Nick’s Roast Beef Going to Long Time Bartender

Posted by Foobooz on June 5th, 2012

Grub Street tipped us off to a story Dan Gross wrote about the closure of 32° in Old City. Our immediate reaction was, 32° was still open? But we were sorry to see that Nick’s Roast Beef was also mentioned as shuttering and coming under new ownership.

Luckily for everyone who looked at Nick’s Roast Beef as an oasis on 2nd Street (we always enjoyed the confused looks on stiletto wearing young women when they made a left instead of heading upstairs to 32°), the name taking over the business is a familiar one. It’s Joe Schultice, better known as “Joe Dog,” the longtime short wearing bartender with the long hair. We’re not sure what Joe has in store for the Old City institution but we’re sure it won’t be a “luxe lounge” and thank goodness for that.

Hot Sandwich Safari Finals Shaping Up

Posted by Foobooz on July 16th, 2010

Each year Glen Macnow exhaustively tracks down the best in a Philly food category. Last year he crowned Paesano’s Daddy Wad as the best hoagie in the area.

This year he’s back looking for the best hot specialty sandwich. That means no hoagies or cheesesteaks need apply. It also means lots of great hot roast beef and pork.

On Thursday the Hot Sandwich Safari Finals will be held at The Fieldhouse at 11th and Filbert. The top six finishers will be present to make their sandwiches.

Celebrity judges will join Glen Macnow to crown the champion. Listeners who show up will also have a chance to taste the sandwiches and crown the Listeners’ Choice Award.

Macnow’s top six currently looks like this:

  1. Roast Beef on the Outs, Old Original Nick’s Roast Beef
  2. The Schmitter, McNally’s Tavern
  3. Chicken Italiano, Shank’s Pier 40
  4. Hot Pastrami on Rye, Hershel’s East Side Deli
  5. Hot Roast Pork, Carlino’s Specialty Foods
  6. Meatball Sandwich, Pastaficio Homemade Pasta Co.

Nick’s Roast Beef On Walnut

Posted by Foobooz on February 20th, 2009

nicks_roast_beefLong before Nick’s Roast Beef had the great idea of putting bits of beef and gravy on their French fries they had a bit of an empire. Only three remain, two under original ownership in South Philadelphia and Delaware County and the third, which started as a franchise is in Old City.

Tonight

Posted by Foobooz on January 16th, 2007

Thinking meat? How about bringing a meat loving friend and chowing down at Fogo de Chão. If the price tag scares you a bit for a Tuesday night out. Then head to the original Nick’s Roast Beef at 20th and Jackson and don’t forget to order the gravy fries. Crispy fries heaped with gravy and more meat! A decadent treat.
