Darkness Falling on Alla Spina Tonight

Posted by Foobooz on October 31st, 2012

For Halloween tonight, Alla Spina is turning to the dark side with eight black beers on draft. Come in costume and get $2 off all the dark beers on tap. Elysian Dark O’ The Moon Pumpkin Stout will be half-off all night ($3.50), even for those too lame to wear a costume.

There will be a fire breathing and sword swallowing sideshow act out front, spooky tunes on the jukebox, and Italian horror movies on the big screen.

Pig in a Pub: Trey Popp Reviews Alla Spina

Posted by Foobooz on May 29th, 2012

It’s a celebration of the pig at Marc Vetri’s Alla Spina. Trey Popp reviews the North Broad Street gastropub meets trattoria.

Philadelphia has long been a cultural conservator for classic Italian-American cuisine, with the emphasis put firmly on conservative. Alla Spina, though, plays looser, imagining that culinary fusion anew: how it looks in a time when bar counters are replacing white tablecloths, Fryolators are busier than pasta pots, and Mama’s red gravy has none of the cultural cachet of pig flesh served straight off the skull.

Relish in West Oak Lane

Posted by Foobooz on June 30th, 2011

Adam Erace heads out to West Oak Lane to check in on the Bynum brothers’ Relish. He finds Southern inspired classics done well in an oddly intimate 5,000 square feet space.

The performances in the “café” float like spring zephyrs over a smoked-glass partition into the dining room, where the melodies are absorbed by the swirled carpets and the lucky ears of the diners.
