Brooklyn Flea Philly Is Looking for More Food Vendors

Posted by Foobooz on June 14th, 2013

brooklyn-flea-philly

Brooklyn Flea Philly already has a significant food presence with Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Red Hook Lobster, Wursthaus Schmitz, Nomad Pizza and this week, Alchemy Creamery from Brooklyn is joining the fun. Also look for Hot Diggity in a week or two. But that’s not enough, Brooklyn Flea Philly is still looking for more food vendors to serve under the flea market’s tents.

So if you’re a chef with a side-project, a startup with a great idea that you want to test at the market and have the intestinal fortitude to make it through the City’s Office of Food Protection’s Special Event licensing process, the Brooklyn Flea wants to hear your idea.

Pitch your concept at http://www.brooklynflea.com/sellphilly or email philly@brooklynflea.com with questions about eligibility.

Pictured above is the Paella Valenciana from David Ansill’s menu at Bar Ferdinand. The feast of shellfish, chicken, chorizo and rice is more than enough for two to share and at $30, it is a bargain.

Springtime Alchemy Happening at Emmanuelle

Posted by Foobooz on May 29th, 2013

Brian Freedman finds that Christian Gaal and Phoebe Esmon have created a warm weather menu of seasonally appropriate cocktails at Northern Liberties’ Emmanuelle, that are far from dumbed down

Several weeks ago, I had a chance to check out a number of the new drinks as they were approaching their final stages of development, and the results, as I expected, were stunning. One drink in particular I can’t stop thinking about is the Satyricon, a brilliant assembly of gin, dry curaçao, lemon, cinnamon and cardamom tinctures, and an ingenious red pepper-carrot-ginger syrup. An hour after I tasted it, I was still trying to parse it in my mind: It goes down both dangerously easily (as is the goal of this season’s drinks) and lingers on the palate beautifully. Esmon and Gaal are alchemists as much as they are mixologists, and the payoff of their painstaking work is evident in every sip.

Jerry’s Bar in Northern Liberties Opens

Posted by Sam Bloch on May 20th, 2013

JerrysBar_46Jerry’s Bar in Northern Liberties opened over the weekend for dinner. Chef Marshall Green formerly of Cafe Estelle is in the kitchen. Green is known for his great brunch, which will be served at Jerry’s on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. starting in June. The highlights of the brunch menu include a cream cheese walnut sticky bun, multiple types of pancakes, French toast, steak and eggs, a brunch burger and a falafel and hummus sandwich.

Dinner at Jerry’s is served daily from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. with dishes like smoked trout salad, wings, meatballs and toast, escargots, a fried haddock sandwich, steak frites, and potato gnocchi.

Jerry’s Bar is the same name and location as one of Northern Liberties last dive bars but you’ll be hard-pressed to find much of that bar in the updated version.

Ansill’s Triumphant Return to Philadelphia at Bar Ferdinand

Posted by Foobooz on May 13th, 2013

Craig LaBan bestows an enthusiastic two bells on David Ansill’s version of Bar Ferdinand.

The fennel-crusted tuna, essentially Spanish-inspired sashimi draped over haricot verts, caper berries, kalamata olive vinaigrette, boquerone anchovies, saffron-tomato conserva, and shaved bottarga (“a little smoked tuna dust!” says Ansill), pushed piquance to the edge of boldness without sliding over. His citrusy, sous-vide-cooked octopus was meltingly tender. A simple crab “croqueta,” almost fluffy with sweet meat beside a crunchy nest of shaved fennel and citrus, showed classic elegance.

A crock of crispy noodle fideos tossed with sherry cream and wild mushrooms brought focused, earthy vegetarian flavors. But Ansill’s talent for alt-meats is also on joyful display. Aside from the shoestring shreds of fried pig ears with purple mustard, there were juicy squares of pork belly with a bacon-sherry reduction, and pork cheeks, brined overnight, then sublimely braised in tomato brava sauce sparked with ginger.

Northern Liberties’ Bar Ferdinand is busting out a fiery new addition to its Liberties Walk space: a handcrafted wood-burning oven, constructed by owner Owen Kamihira himself. Chef David Ansill, inspired by the flavors of Spain, is offering a new Late Night Menu that features an assortment of small and large dishes straight out of the oven.

The new late night menu is available in the bar and dining room and is offered Sunday through Thursday from 10:00pm – midnight and Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. – 1 a.m.

Bar Ferdinand’s new late night menu is divided into Tapas ($4 – $14), Spanish Flatbreads ($12 – $13), Raciones ($10 – $14) and Charcuterie & Cheese ($15 – $18). Familiar dishes like Spanish Octopus share space with bold roasted dishes including brandied chorizo, sardines and shrimp coca.
