Han Dynasty Expanding In A Big Way

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 10th, 2013

handynasty_yum

Okay, so first there was the news that Han Dynasty owner, Han Chiang, was looking for an “apprentice” who, among other things, would learn Chiang’s way of doing business and make millions of dollars. And now more info on Chiang’s plans are coming down via Eater, which is reporting that the local Szechuan impresario is making some serious moves toward total world domination.

Anybody In The Market For A Restaurant Space In Old City?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on December 13th, 2012

Because there’s one available. Or one that will be available come spring. The space at 263 North 3rd was once the home of the Lite Bite Luncheonette (Photo by HughE Dillon in October), and it looks like its on someone’s schedule for redevelopment. Some details…

Under Construction!! 2,800 square feet!! Coming Soon! Retail – restaurant space will be available for rent. Strong residential neighborhood in need of a fabulous restaurant. Good time to accommodate your needs and changes. Now is the time to design and make it your own!

Yeah, that’s a lot of exclamation points. But what do you say, Foobooz? What do you think should move in to this space? Or do any restaurateurs out there just want to call dibs right now?

Reserve Shuts The Doors

Posted by Jason Sheehan on September 14th, 2012

For a couple days now, word has been leaking out that Reservethe Old City steakhouse that opened in February–was headed for a fall. There were texts. There were emails. There were whispers. But now it looks as though the rumors are true. I just called the place and no one is picking up the phone, and the Open Table reservation page has been disabled.

No idea yet whether this is a temporary or permanent closure, but things aren’t looking good.

Craft & Claw Coming To Old City

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 31st, 2012

Over at Eater, they’re reporting that the space recently vacated by Old City douche-magnet Mad River is shortly to become Craft & Claw a crab-and-craft-beer joint (get it?) being brought to town by Max Tucker of Baltimore’s Bond Street Social. We talked about this a few days ago when the news about Mad City first broke (to much raucous applause), but it’s good to get confirmation.

So what will one find at Craft & Claw? Lots of crab. Lots of beer. Chef Nick Fabian from Anastasi Seafood. And, likely, us since all three of those things sound pretty good right about now.

Tragically, there’s no opening date set yet. Or even hinted at. So the odds are pretty bad that the place will be open by, say, dinner time tonight.

Reserve Opening Tomorrow, With Some Reservations

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 24th, 2012

The grand opening tomorrow of the opulent, $30-to-$50-a-plate Reserve steakhouse in Old City can mean one of only a few things: 1) That the recession is truly behind us and co-owner Didier LaFontant and his quiet partners are hurrying to spend money before another downturn strikes; 2) The aforementioned LaFontant is hopelessly optimistic and/or foolish; or, 3) Mr. LaFontant is a visionary.

Here’s why. Reserve is gorgeous and plush and extravagant in a way that many of us have come to feel a little squeamish about. It’s bejeweled with stained glass windows, looming Corinthian columns, towering ceilings draped in frescos and a sexy cubby of a cigar bar hidden in plain sight at the top of a sweeping wrought-iron staircase. It exists to gift Old City with fine dining, chilled lobster, martinis and power networking. And as poor Georges Perrier, the bedraggled owners of Union Trust, and every restaurateur who’s recently scurried to add a patio and a light-fare menu can tell you, we just don’t go out like that anymore.

Tonight (And Tomorrow): Anniversary Dinners At Fork

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 8th, 2012

It’s been three years since Terence Feury stepped behind the stove at Fork, and he’s celebrating his third anniversary with a series of three “Chef’s Bistro Dinners.” So what, exactly, is a Chef’s Bistro Dinner, you ask? It’s a four-course tasting menu, with wine, for just $45–the dishes designed by Feury each morning and prepared from supplies hand-picked by Feury from local markets and purveyors.

Bierstube Coming To Old City

Posted by Lou Mancinelli on January 26th, 2012

The Germans are coming!

And they’ll be bringing a meaty addition to the food scene in this town that’s already getting fat like good pork with Bierstube, set to open at 206 Market Street. When? We’re not exactly sure. But if their recent Craigslist call-for-staff is any indication, it won’t be long before there’s more schnitzel, bratwurst and some Weihenstephaner in town.

I guess Stephen Starr’s Frankford Hall and South Street’s German beer hall Brauhaus Schmitz (not to mention Garces’ upcoming Frohman’s Wursthaus) were on to something. Now they’ll have competition.
