Besides being a day that brings out the worst in America, Black Friday is also a symbol for the kickoff of the holiday season. And, as always, with Black Friday, comes savings, bargains, and deals—and Sansom Street’s Opa is joining in.
Starting this Friday, Opa will be offering their Holiday Lunch Special: the Opa Signature Burger with house-cut oregano fries and a soft drink for only $5.95 (sales/gratuity not included). The special runs until January 1st, 2013 and it’s only available during lunch hours, Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Greek hotspot Opa is bringing in the fall with delicious new selections inspired by the recent trip to Greece by owner George Tsioursis. New menu items include Greek Flatbread topped with sausage, tahini and manouri crumble, and Lamb Stew with parsnips, eggplant, and oregano gnocchi. Newly promoted chef James Wells is leading the kitchen, so stop by and see what he’s cooking up.

Chef Andrew Brown is moving on from Opa. Owner George Tsiouris says that Brown who has been there since the opa-ning will be leaving at the end of this month and sous chef James Wells will be taking on the executive chef responsibilities. Tsiouris recently returned from a research trip to Greece and is looking forward to introducing a variety of new dishes this fall.
Brown who was previously executive chef at White Dog Cafe and a sous chef at Django has his next gig lined up but isn’t saying where just yet.

Opa pulled a fast one and managed to softly open its Drury Street Beer Garden late last month without anyone knowing but now we have the rest of the details on the backyard beer garden with a bit of a 70s vibe.
The short food menu includes a salad, gyro, cheese fries, pretzel ring, chicken fingers and most interestingly, a crab boil served with corn on the cob, sausage and potatoes.
Drury Beer Garden caters to groups with its offering for a table of six with a case of beer, crab feast and dessert for $150. Spiked lemonade is available for $55 a cooler or $6 a pint.
The beer list, especially the cans are competitively priced with $2.50 Yuengling Lager and many craft cans for $4.
Hours are 5 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Thursday, till 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

We’re into week two of #FoieFridays with a growing group of Philadelphia restaurants offering special $10 foie gras dishes on Fridays in June.
The event is in response to the imminent outlawing of foie gras in California. Here’s the list we have so far. Chefs, please email us at tips@foobooz.com for with your additions.

In protest of the recent foie gras troubles in California (where a complete Nanny State ban on foie gras is due to take effect on July 1), Philadelphia chefs are teaming up to support their West Coast brethren in fighting the good fight. In order to bring a little light and make a little noise, chefs like Jason Cichonski of Ela have called on their colleagues to bring foie gras to the people.
The result? Foie Fridays. And the first one is tomorrow.

On Tuesday, May 15th at 6pm, Opa will be holding a dinner event with a crash course on the Greek tradition of pita making. Hosted by Chrisoula Tsiouris, the mother of Opa owners George and Vasiliki Tsiouris, and Opa’s executive chef Andrew Brown, the dinner will feature Tsiouris family recipes to teach great pita making.
For $45 a person Chrisoula Tsiouris will impart the secrets of her famous pita on attendees. The dinner includes a shared salad, a sweet custard dessert pita, and a tasting of three pitas from a selection with vegetarian options.

Opa is introducing its new Spring Menu this week. Among the new dishes showing up on the menu:

Oil and wine braised, shaved bottarga, ladolemono sauce

Tomato saffron citrus broth, pita
Duck Confit
Warm mushroom salad, date-raisin emulsion
Yellowfin Tuna
Pan-seared, pickled vegetables, shoestring potatoes, caper-yogurt sauce
This Sunday, Easter is celebrated by the Greek Orthodox Church. In honor of the holiday, Opa is offering special Greek Easter dishes from Monday, April 16th to Wednesday, April 18th.

Today is Opa’s first anniversary and the Greek restaurant and bar is offering $1 specials for lunch and dinner.
Also this weekend, owners George and Vasiliki Tsiouris are donating 10% of all the weekend’s profits to the Support Center for Child Advocates, an organization that pro bono legal assistance and social service advocacy for abused and neglected children in Philadelphia.
UPDATE: We were just told that at unannounced intervals throughout the night Opa will be offering an open bar between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

On Thursday, January 19th Opa is introducing its new weeknight happy hour. Many of the most popular items from the menu will be available for under $5 including skewers for just a buck. From 5 to 7 p.m. weeknights and again from 10 to 11 p.m. the Greek restaurant will also be offering $3 beers and discounted cocktails and wines.
In order to celebrate the beginning of the happy hour this Thursday, complimentary food and drinks will be served at half-hour intervals between 5 and 7 p.m.
