The Original Lee’s Hoagie House Closes After Almost 60 Years

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on September 12th, 2012

The original Lee’s Hoagie House on Cheltenham Avenue has closed. When Lee’s started at 19th and Cheltenham in Mount Airy in 1953 they became part of the Philadelphia food tradition and the neighborhood. Since that first opening Lee’s has licensed 16 more shops across the Greater Philadelphia area.

The Insider reports that the original Lee’s changed ownership last year and ever since then the quality of the namesake brand had not been maintained at that location. The site was rebranded Lee’s at Cheltenham when the new licensee took over, but Lee’s partners have asked the shop to remove the “Lee’s” altogether. The shop then closed.

Luckily for Philadelphians those 16 other locations are still up and running and this change does not affect any other shops. After almost 60 years it is sad to see an original go, but it looks like the Lee’s brand is here to stay.

Tonight: Celebrity Bartender Series at R2L

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on August 8th, 2012

As part of R2L’s Celebrity Bartender series District Attorney Seth Williams will be taking the stand – er, bar – tonight and serving up cocktails from 6-8pm with $1 from each drink going to his charity of choice, the Pet Support Phashion Charity Affair. And tonight only, chef Daniel Stern will be serving up the DA Burger (pictured above) in honor of Williams, which will feature LaFrieda beef, grilled bacon and salami, Gruyere cheese, french fries, collard slaw, heirloom tomato, caramelized onion and R2L’s special sauce.

Each burger is $22 which, yes, is pretty damn pricey, but $5 from each burger sold goes toward the PSPCA. So you can feel good about helping animals while eating at least two of them.

This series, which has recently featured “Philebrities” like Stan Hochman of the Daily News, radio personality Howard Eskin, and Eagles defensive end Darryl Tapp, is set to occur Tuesday and Wednesday nights this summer with more celebrities to come. Stop by throughout the summer to see your favorite local celebs behind the bar for charity.

James Beard Awards: Finalists (And Journalists) Announced

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 19th, 2012

Okay, so for those of you of a mind to party on James Beard Awards night (May 7th for the chef awards, May 4th for the journalism awards–the Science & Tech Oscars of the food world), it’s going to be very easy for you to root for the home team this year. Why? Because Philadelphia pretty much fell off the map between the announcement of the semi-finalists and this afternoon’s reveal of the finalists.

While we were looking pretty good going into the big dance with 19 potential nominees (including Tashan, Franklin Mortgage, Standard Tap, Vetri, Pierre Calmels, Marcie Turney, Joe Cicala, Lee Styer, Jessie Prawlucki and others), the only local names that made it into the finals were…

A St. Patrick’s Day Guide To Whiskey Drinking: Get A Little Irish In Ya

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 16th, 2012

Some of you out there will be drinking stout tomorrow. Some of you will be knocking back cocktails. But for those of you who like your whiskey straight, may we humbly present a field guide to some of the finer (and nastier) Irish Brain Tonics you’ll likely find behind the bar tomorrow. Sláinte mhaith.

Jameson Irish Whiskey

‘The Opinion: The standard by which all other Irish whiskies are (rightly) judged: a smooth, almost spicy malted barley whiskey with a slightly sweet and buttery aftertaste. The only reason not to choose Jameson as your straight liquor of choice this St. Patty’s Day is if, for some reason, our expert judges have already been to your local bar and drunk it all. In that case, go for the Redbreast.

More Whiskey, Please
