Philly Cooks 2013

About Last Night: Philly Cooks 2013

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 1st, 2013

PC138

So last night’s Philly Cooks Big Event was a blast. 40-odd restaurants, all handing out their best snacks to the crowd. Many, many bars pouring many, many cocktails and beers for the thirsty hordes. Bakers and cake-makers and a whole hallway full of purveyors and suppliers offering samples of their products. It was one helluva night, and almost all of the restaurants brought out their big name chefs to make sure that everything went smoothly (let me be the first to apologize to anyone eating out in Philly last night and expecting those recognizable names to be working behind the stoves).

When these things are done, I generally run down a list of the bests and the worsts of the evening, but last night was one of those rare times when nothing was disappointing and every chef in the place was out to one-up the chef next to him. So from Fette Sau‘s ribs to Matyson‘s uni mousse, from the foie gras liverwurst at Brauhaus Schmitz to Marigold‘s brilliant butternut squash soup with cinnamon foam to the little bahn mi buns from Le Viet, everything was delicious. And with multiple cocktails from London Grill, Lemon HillEmmanuelle and Ranstead Room to wash it all down (not to mention the shots of cold-pressed Vietnamese coffee from Rival Bros. chased with Matt Ridgway’s PorcSalted popcorn), by the end of the night I wasn’t really in any condition to remember anything going wrong anyhow.

Thankfully, we had COOK’s photo ninja and Friend of Foobooz, Yoni Nimrod, there to document it all for us. So if, for some reason, you weren’t able to make it to the party last night, here’s just a little bit of what you missed.

About Last Night: Philly Cooks Week Tasting Tours

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 26th, 2013

TastingTourM1

So last night marked the start of Philly Cooks Week, and we celebrated with our first three Tasting Tours–descending with the starving hordes on Midtown Village, North Broad and Rittenhouse Square to eat, drink, eat some more and even learn a few things along the way.

So what did you miss if you were not one of the lucky few to get in on these deals?

Photos and more, right this way

FINAL UPDATE There Goes That Foobooz News Van Again: A Scavenger Hunt For Free Philly Cooks Tickets

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 20th, 2013

news-van-strawbridges

FINAL UPDATE: The game is done, folks. All the pictures have been found, all the winners have been chosen. Thanks to everyone for playing along, and if you weren’t one of the lucky six to pick up a golden ticket for this year’s event, remember: Tickets are still available for sale at the Philly Cooks website.

As most of you probably know, Philly Cooks Week is next week and we’re celebrating everything about Philly’s booming, remarkable, never dull restaurant scene with several nights worth of food and booze and famous chefs and tasting tours of the city’s various food neighborhoods. All of this fun will culminate with our Big Event on Thursday, February 28, at the old Strawbridge’s building (pictured above) where dozens of chefs and 50-odd restaurants, bars and food purveyors will gather to throw an enormous party.

Over here at Foobooz World Headquarters, we’re totally excited for the big night. But we’re even more excited by the fact that we’ve just pried loose 5 more pairs of free tickets to give away–and that we’ve come up with a nice little game to pick out winners.

The details are thus: Somewhere on the Foobooz website we’ve hidden five pictures of the Foobooz Full Team Coverage News Van (and no, the above picture is not one of the five). Each picture is worth a pair of free tickets. Find the snap, put the link (along with your name) in the comments section, win a pair of tickets. Simple as that.

Except, well, it really isn’t. Foobooz is kind of a big place these days. We have almost 11,600 posts here, 64 individual pages, countless slideshows and videos and guides. And the winning pictures? They can be hidden anywhere. So, of course, we’re going to be doling out clues. They’ll go out via the Foobooz twitter feed and as updates to this post at completely irregular and unscheduled times.

Couple of other little details:

1) You have to be over 21. Sorry, kids.

2) One pair per player. If you’re a genius and you find two pictures, keep it to yourself because you still only get one pair of tickets. Them’s the breaks.

3) We’re going to keep the game going as long as necessary, but obviously speed counts. It’s only the first person who wins anything, so you might want to start searching now.

4) To wit, here’s your first clue… And an UPDATE after the jump

Who Won the Free Tickets to Philly Cooks?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 15th, 2013

philly-cooks-week

So remember back at the beginning of the week when we said we were going to give away free tickets to Philly Cooks to some random fan who tweeted out the #PhillyCooks hashtag? Yeah, well apparently a LOT of you thought that was a really awesome idea.

But never fear, we now have our randomly chosen winner to announce. And Madeline Delaney, you are it. A pair of tickets to the Big Event are now yours. Just drop me an email at jsheehan@phillymag.com and we can discuss how to get them into your hands.

For all of you out there who aren’t Madeline Delaney, don’t fret. There are still tickets available for the Big Event on Thursday, February 28 and it is going to be awesome–with chefs and restaurants and booze and snacks and farmers and everything that makes our scene cool all in one place for one night. Also, we still have tickets available for one of the nine Tasting Tours that we’re running in the days leading up to the Big Event. The South Street tour, which will be led by Foobooz founder and man-about-town Art Etchells, will be making stops at Supper, Percy Street BBQ and Brauhaus Schmitz for beer and barbecue and beer and sausages and more beer and deviled eggs and then probably some beer, too.

So get on over there and get your tickets, okay? And in case you need any convincing, check out the list below for all the restaurants, all the bartenders and all the purveyors participating in this year’s Philly Cooks event.

Have You Got Your Tickets For #PhillyCooks Yet?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 12th, 2013

philly-cooks-week

If you have, then good. You are an intelligent, well-organized human and will no doubt have a blast stuffing your face and getting weird when the Big Event kicks off at 6:30pm on February 28.

If you’ve been intending to buy your tickets but were just waiting for a little reminder, consider this your wake-up call. Tickets to the February 28 party at the old Strawbridge’s  are still on sale now, but we’re filling up fast, so…you know. You might want to get on that. Like, now. Check out the Philly Cooks 2013 event page for all the details.

But, if you are just lazy, broke or a seriously cheap bastard clever consumer, Foobooz loves you anyway and is here to help. We’re giving away a pair of free tickets to the Big Event to one lucky Twitterator who tweets this post with the #PhillyCooks hashtag in the headline.

No, seriously. That’s all it takes. Hit that little tweet button down there and you’re entered into the drawing. We’ll announce the randomly-selected winner at the end of the week.
