About Last Night: Philly Cooks 2013

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 1st, 2013

So last night’s Philly Cooks Big Event was a blast. 40-odd restaurants, all handing out their best snacks to the crowd. Many, many bars pouring many, many cocktails and beers for the thirsty hordes. Bakers and cake-makers and a whole hallway full of purveyors and suppliers offering samples of their products. It was one helluva night, and almost all of the restaurants brought out their big name chefs to make sure that everything went smoothly (let me be the first to apologize to anyone eating out in Philly last night and expecting those recognizable names to be working behind the stoves).

When these things are done, I generally run down a list of the bests and the worsts of the evening, but last night was one of those rare times when nothing was disappointing and every chef in the place was out to one-up the chef next to him. So from Fette Sau‘s ribs to Matyson‘s uni mousse, from the foie gras liverwurst at Brauhaus Schmitz to Marigold‘s brilliant butternut squash soup with cinnamon foam to the little bahn mi buns from Le Viet, everything was delicious. And with multiple cocktails from London Grill, Lemon HillEmmanuelle and Ranstead Room to wash it all down (not to mention the shots of cold-pressed Vietnamese coffee from Rival Bros. chased with Matt Ridgway’s PorcSalted popcorn), by the end of the night I wasn’t really in any condition to remember anything going wrong anyhow.

Thankfully, we had COOK’s photo ninja and Friend of Foobooz, Yoni Nimrod, there to document it all for us. So if, for some reason, you weren’t able to make it to the party last night, here’s just a little bit of what you missed.

About Last Night: Philly Cooks Week Tasting Tours in Old City and Washington Square West

Posted by Arthur Etchells on February 27th, 2013

At Fork, Eli Kulp gave us something completely different. At Fork, Eli Kulp gave us something completely different.

Yesterday was the second night of Philly Cooks Week and we had Tasting Tours in Old City, Washington Square West and Rittenhouse Square. Yours truly, led the Old City tour that visited the expansion of Zahav, Eli Kulp’s duck feast at Fork and the Wonka-esque Shane’s Confectionery.

The Philly Cooks Big Event is set for February 28th or as we like to call it, this Thursday. Tickets still remain but there’s no guarantee they’ll be available for long. In addition to the forty restaurants (many from Philadelphia magazine’s 50 Best list) serving up bites, there will also be some of the city’s best bartenders whipping up cocktails and an artisanal alley which will include the area’s best artisanal producers, selling their wares.

Tickets are $85 per person and include all the bites you can eat, an open bar and access to the artisanal alley. It all goes down at the former Strawbridges building, Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Who Won the Free Tickets to Philly Cooks?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 15th, 2013

philly-cooks-week

So remember back at the beginning of the week when we said we were going to give away free tickets to Philly Cooks to some random fan who tweeted out the #PhillyCooks hashtag? Yeah, well apparently a LOT of you thought that was a really awesome idea.

But never fear, we now have our randomly chosen winner to announce. And Madeline Delaney, you are it. A pair of tickets to the Big Event are now yours. Just drop me an email at jsheehan@phillymag.com and we can discuss how to get them into your hands.

For all of you out there who aren’t Madeline Delaney, don’t fret. There are still tickets available for the Big Event on Thursday, February 28 and it is going to be awesome–with chefs and restaurants and booze and snacks and farmers and everything that makes our scene cool all in one place for one night. Also, we still have tickets available for one of the nine Tasting Tours that we’re running in the days leading up to the Big Event. The South Street tour, which will be led by Foobooz founder and man-about-town Art Etchells, will be making stops at Supper, Percy Street BBQ and Brauhaus Schmitz for beer and barbecue and beer and sausages and more beer and deviled eggs and then probably some beer, too.

So get on over there and get your tickets, okay? And in case you need any convincing, check out the list below for all the restaurants, all the bartenders and all the purveyors participating in this year’s Philly Cooks event.
