About Saturday Night: Chip Roman Debuts New Candy Line and Jen Carroll Helps Out

Posted by Foobooz on March 25th, 2013

ACHIEVEability05

Saturday Night was ACHIEVEability’s Food for Thought charity event, where more than thirty local restaurants prepared tasting plates for guests of the event.

HughE Dillon was there and in this photo captured just about all the news to be had at the charity event. Chip Roman, owner of Blackfish, Mica and Ela was on hand showing off his new line of Bluestone candies. Jen Carroll was helping out Phoebe Esmon as Esmon served a couple of different punches for the assembled, but Carroll couldn’t help but come to the aid of  Karl Isaiah, of Cake Boulangerie, who was serving solo next to Esmon’s cocktail stand.

Tiki Bars And Black Lectroids: Two Important Things To Know About Emmanuelle

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 12th, 2013

emmanuelle-door

Over on the CBS3 site, they got an interview with Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal where the two talk all about the vibe at Emmanuelle (the little cocktail bar that opened behind PYT at the Piazza), the decor, the new cocktail list they’re working on and the punches that they feature. And all of that is just fine.

But buried down at the bottom of the story are the two most important things I’ve heard about the place since it opened.

Thing 1: They have a band that plays there called the Hong Kong Cavaliers. Those who get the reference will understand exactly how cool that is. Hey, wherever you go, there you are…

Thing 2: Emmanuelle is planning on expanding once the weather turns nice–and that expansion will take the form of an outdoor tiki bar. Will this be the place that finally make Philly’s tiki dreams come true?

Yes. Unless Duke’s gets its act together and beats them to the punch.

Punch, get it?

Yeah, it’s just that kind of day…

UPDATED: Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal Organizing Drinkers (And Bartenders) For Sandy Relief

Posted by Tara Nurin on November 16th, 2012

Ever since they left The Farmer’s Cabinet, things have been relatively quiet on the Phistian (that’s Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal to us non-celeb types) front, as they’ve flitted around the city and the country these past few months, gypsy bartending, writing cocktail menus and spending time with Esmon’s family in North Carolina. But now they’re back, at least for the moment, and they’ve arrived with a purpose: to harness their considerable bar cred to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Emmanuelle, New Cocktail Bar for Northern Liberties

Posted by Foobooz on November 14th, 2012

Sylvia Kristel starred in Emmanuelle, a 1974 erotic French film

Northern Liberties and the Piazza at Schmidt’s are getting a new bar. Tommy Up is opening Emmanuelle, a craft cocktail bar located on the Piazza but facing Hancock Street behind PYT. Author and bartender Katie Loeb has designed the drink menu and  Phoebe Esmon (Farmers’ Cabinet, Kennett, Chick’s) will be behind the bar.

The name Emmanuelle is inspired by French soft-porn films of the 70s. The bar will open to the public on Wednesday, November 22nd.

Emmanuelle’s drink menu will feature a wide selection of aperitifs, sparkling cocktails, French cocktail classics and new twists featuring French spirits. A curated selection of wines and beers will also be available.

Itinerant food writer Charlotte Druckman‘s new book has got some serious chops. Skirt Steak: Women Chefs on Standing the Heat and Staying in the Kitchen, reveals exactly what its title suggests–offering a look inside the life, triumphs, struggles and journeys of over 70 female chefs.

To celebrate the book, a series of collaborative chef dinners that benefit non-profit organizations related to women are being held across the country. And lucky us, one of these dinners will be held right here in Philly…

Rickey Night at Kennett

Posted by Foobooz on August 2nd, 2012

Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal will be behind the bar at Kennett tonight with a special menu of Rickeys. The Rickey, for those not in the know was invented in the 1880s at Shoomaker’s in Washington, DC by barkeep George A. Williamson. It is said that ”Colonel” Joe Rickey (lobbyist and man-about-town) collaborated with Williamson to devise a drink to combat the muggy heat of the capital’s summers. The original Rickey consisted of whiskey, fresh lime, & sparkling water. Though bourbon was first favored, the Gin Rickey has had more famous past. But at Kennett tonight there will plenty of room for an entire menu of Rickeys.

Esmon and Gaal are bartending tonight and next Thursday at Kennett. Next week will feature Allagash beers and Di Bruno Bros. cheeses.
