We snapped this shot of the now under construction Kermit’s Bake Shoppe on Washington Avenue yesterday morning. We also reached out to owner Adam Ritter (Sidecar Bar, Kraftwork) for a status check. He tells us that test batches will start this week and they are thinking they’re about a month away from opening the pizzeria + bakery.

We wound up catching the American Sardine Bar commercial several times over the weekend. The 30-second spot features Mr. Bait Fish at the Point Breeze bar being lored in by an attractive female. The commercial was shot and produced by First Capital Pictures, a local outfit headquartered in Old City.
Now the video is out on the web, so check it out.

We chatted with Adam Ritter of the Sidecar and Kraftwork about his newest project, Kermit’s Bake Shop. The bake shop (it’s like a bakery and pizzeria had a baby) is planning on opening in a couple of months at 22nd and Washington. The spot will offer pizza to-go and for delivery. This won’t be a brick oven type pizzeria, those thin pies just wouldn’t travel well. Instead here it will be traditional American pizzas (not cute) along with seasonal soups and salads.
On the bakery side, local pastry chef and Next Great Baker contestant Chad Durkin will be the baker. Ritter tells us to imagine a “bakery Americano.” Sticky buns, cakes, cookies and fresh-baked bread. Ritter imagines customers will be able to make it a one stop shop for a birthday party. A couple of pizzas, some soup and salad and of course the birthday cake.

According to chef Scott Schroeder, there are two reasons why his Point Breeze joint, American Sardine Bar, became the place it is. First, because he didn’t think the world needed another gastropub (especially one so close to the gastropub he already runs, South Philly Tap Room). And second, because he felt confident that “people will go into bad neighborhoods for a good sandwich.” Here’s what he’s using as bait.

Hawk Krall’s Gatsby Combo was the first collaboration sandwich on American Sardine Bar’s menu. This month chef Scott Schroeder has worked with food writer and ASB neighbor, Drew Lazor to produce “Dad’s Sandwich.”
The sandwich is made of turkey and pork roll, then topped with cheddar, jalapeño, dijonaise and barbecue potato chips. It’s served on a buttery grilled Texas toast. It will be on the menu at American Sardine Bar all month.

Cafe L’Aube owner Jean-Luc Fanny has confirmed that he will be opening another French Cafe (and he stresses that this is not a coffee shop) at 2025 Washington Avenue.
Through a collaboration with NextFab Studio, owned by Rex 1516 owner Evan Malone, Cafe L’Aube will occupy the resident cafe space in the new NextFab Studio facility at 2025 Washington Avenue.
The new cafe will offer the same types crepes and coffee served at Cafe L’Aube, and is tentatively set to open on December 1, 2012.
