Philly’s Best Fries…Revealed!

Posted by Jason Sheehan on August 1st, 2012

fries

Remember a couple week’s ago when we celebrated Potato Week here at Foobooz World HQ? Yeah, that truly was a week just chock full of starchy awesomeness.

But there are still a couple loose ends left hanging from our tuberous festivities, and one of those loose ends is the naming of the best french fry in the city. Oh, we named plenty of bests. We gave you nine places scattered around Philly where the potato-obsessed might score an order of truly excellent fried ‘taters. But because of the Best of Philly issue (which, at that time, hadn’t yet been released), we weren’t able to name the BEST of the best.

But now that is no longer a concern. The Best of Philly issue is on the stands. Everyone knows who has the best pho and the best burgers and the best chicken livers in the city. And now we can finally complete our list of the best french fries in Philadelphia. And the winner was…

Potato Week Q&A: Philly’s Best French Fry Dipping Sauces

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 13th, 2012

So remember yesterday when we put out our official Potato Week list of the best french fry dipping sauces in Philly? Yeah, that was fun. But, apparently, it also stirred a little bit of debate among Philadelphia’s fry-dipping cognoscenti. So we thought it might be nice if we took a moment to answer some of the questions posed in the comments section about our methods, taste, math skills and general level of awesomeness.

Interrogation right this way…

Potato Week: The Best Fries In Philadelphia

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 13th, 2012

Yay, Potato Week! As our starchy celebrations draw to a close, we have one more big list for you–the results of our research into the realm of that most American(ish) of potato presentations, the french fry.

We had 82 different restaurants under consideration for this list–everything from crowd favorites like Village Whiskey and Hot Diggity to lesser-known (but know less loved) contenders like the long-gone crab fries at Sidecar Bar, the lovely frites at Grace Tavern or those at Eulogy (which had a fiercely committed fan base). Putting our waistlines and cholesterol levels on the line for you, we waded through the possibilities and winnowed everything down to a final list of 10: The best french fries of any variety, in any form, that you’re going to find anywhere in Philadelphia.

Hey, someone’s got to do it, right? This stuff is important. And while we here at Foobooz World HQ are absolutely sure that there isn’t one of you out there who will agree with every inclusion on the list (hell, we don’t even completely agree), there is sure to be something on here for everyone.

Happy Potato Week everyone. And now, on to the list…

Potato Week: Best French Fry Dipping Sauces in Philly

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 12th, 2012

The above photo is what I would consider the semi-final round in our quest for the best french fry dipping sauce in Philly. For you speculators in the crowd, it is 24 different sauces from 10 different restaurants, all collected this afternoon by the intrepid support staff at Foobooz World HQ and all eaten in one sitting by our panel of experts. Our original list consisted of 19 restaurants, which was cut down to 10 by various editors calling certain entries “stupid,” “gross,” or “totally not worth the drive to Manayunk,”

To keep things even and honest, we used the shoestring fries from Continental Midtown as our sauce delivery vehicles (the argument being that shoestrings lend as little of their own flavor as possible to the dipping sauce, and yet still bring some sense of potato starch, fryer oil and salt), and in order to make the list of the best, a sauce’s qualities of awesomeness had to be unanimously agreed upon by all three of our judges. After that, we decided final Top 5 rankings with parliamentary debate, some wheedling, a little horse-trading and, finally, monkey knife fights.

So who has the best dipping sauce in Philly?

Six-Pack: Poutine in Philadelphia

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 11th, 2012

Ah, poutine, arguably the best Canadian import prior to Ryan Gosling, and even more delicious. This Montrealean dish usually consists of French fries, brown gravy, and cheese curds. Due to its popularity, poutine has trickled down into the good old USA and some Philadelphia restaurants have caught on. These six places serve it up right.

Potato Week: The Sweet Potato, Friend Or Foe?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 9th, 2012

Okay, so here’s the thing. We could make it through Potato Week without ever mentioning the humble sweet potato. We could gleefully thumb our noses at the thugs from the Sweet Potato Defense League and all their starchy ilk and completely ignore the most recent few years of culinary development in which the sweet potato has played a minor (though vitally important) role. We could ignore the pies, the fries, the waffles and pates, the mashes and smashes and stuffings and all the other things that are being done with sweet potatoes today and, in an iron-clad commitment to genetic purity, only lavish our Potato Week attentions on the solanum tuberosum end of the tuberous plant spectrum because, after all, the sweet potato (or ipomoea batatas), is only a distant relative of the potato, linked taxonomically at order solanales but then diverging rather markedly into the family of morning glories and other poisonous leafy things.

Welcome To Potato Week!

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 9th, 2012

Foobooz Potato Week - Full Team Coverage

Yes ladies and gentlemen, it has arrived: The first annual Foobooz Potato Week. As we mentioned a couple weeks back, we here at Foobooz HQ have been hard at work planning all manner of things potato-ish for this week’s festivities–from lists and polls and essays to potato-based contests and a big guide to all the best french fries that this fine city has to offer, to be released on that most holy day of the Potato Calendar: Friday, July 13th, National French Fry Day.

So why Potato Week, you ask? Because potatoes are awesome. Because potatoes are a bedrock element of the classic American table–one half of the whole meat-and-potatoes duality that we lived and dined under for ages until our blessed bubble of gastronomic simplicity (or ignorance) was pierced by the coming of California cuisine, Asian fusion, sushi bars, lemongrass, raspberry coulis, wasabi, truffle oil, molten chocolate cakes and all manner of haute Froggery. Potatoes are the mother starch of American cuisine, the soft bed upon which most of our comfort foods lie. They are, at once, the simplest, most basic thing in the world and one of the most enduring ingredients in any canon wise enough to employ them. We here at Foobooz HQ love potatoes. We crave potatoes. We have fought about potatoes, plotted and planned over potatoes, spent long afternoons hunting after potatoes. Like corn or empanadas or whiskey, potatoes are so much a part of us that, molecularly speaking, I’m pretty sure that we’ve each got an arm or a leg that we owe entirely to the humble spud.

Thus, Potato Week in all it’s starchy glory. Feast, all, and be welcome. And stay tuned for our first Potato Week puzzler: The Sweet Potato, Friend Or Foe…?
