Posted by Foobooz on April 26th, 2013

NewHopChef4Southwark’s Nick Macri won Hop Chef Tuesday night with “You Can Win Friends with Meat Salad.” A salad of housemade coppa with ginger pickled chiles, ballpark nuts, plus orange and coriander sauce. The dish will be on the menu at Southwark tonight and tomorrow. Wash it down with an Ommegang Hennepin.

Southwark Is Hosting a Tired Hands Beer Dinner

Posted by Foobooz on April 16th, 2013

tiredhandslogoFor this month’s producers dinner at Southwark, chef Nick Macri is welcoming Tired Hands Brewing. The dinner takes place tomorrow, April 17th at 7 p.m. and for $45 you can try four courses of Macri’s food paired with beer from the Ardmore brew pub.

On Thursday night, Southwark will be tapping Ommegang Hennepin in the run up to Hop Chef. Macri will be rolling out a special sausage from 10 p.m. to midnight (Southwark serves food nightly to midnight), but Hop Chef competitors looking for the inside scoop, Macri assures us this won’t be his Hop Chef dish.

New Menu at Little Fish Has Us Hankerinig for Cobia

Posted by Foobooz on April 9th, 2013

little-fish-refreshed-menu

Chadd Jenkins alerted us to his new menu at Little Fish today. Each of the second courses look worth ordering, though we would have a hard time not ordering the cobia with lamb, garbanzo, olives, mint and chilis. Jenkins’ cobia and veal combination that we ate late last year, still stands out as one of our favorite dishes of 2012.

One Bell Review for Bainbridge Street Barrel House

Posted by Foobooz on April 8th, 2013

Craig LaBan reviews Bainbridge Street Barrel House, the beer bar just a block off of South Street in Queen Village. LaBan urges readers to stick with “meals on a bun” and the beer.

[Chef Eric] Paraskevas isn’t afraid of wacky risks.

The risk is, they don’t always work. On occasion, they pay off. His “Porkenstein,” for example, is a towering tribute to pig on a bun, a house-ground pork-butt patty topped with clove-brined, apple-smoked ham, smoked pulled pork, then a slice of belly, tender from a braise and crisped on the griddle. It was a mouthful of flavorful textures that would been even better had it not been smothered in pink “special sauce.”

But the message was clear: The best bets here come on a bun. That pulled pork, on its own with a crunchy slaw, had enough smoky savor and spicy tang to catch my attention (although the rosemaried vinegar sauce needs to be toned down). The Barrel House burger is one of the more traditional efforts – but it’s also one of its best, a well-seasoned half-pound patty topped with melted Muenster and blades of bacon, whose IPA-infused mustard and spicy relish (cucumbers and habaneros) were in perfect harmony.

Kris Restaurant has closed, hand is now becoming part of the Munish Narula empire. The restaurant’s Facebook page says that all gift certificates will be honored at owner Kristian Leuzzi’s, Stogie Joe’s on East Passyunk.

Also in South Philadelphia, paper is up in the windows at Queen Village’s Village Belle and no online reservations are available before Friday, April 5th.

Lou Campanaro, chef/owner of the Village Belle tells us it’s some spring cleaning that will include a new look for the bar and prep work for the outdoor cafe.

Campanaro also tells us the menu is being reformatted to focus on small plates with small prices. The wine and cocktail lists are also being revamped and four new taps are being added.

Village Belle is aiming to reopen this Thursday or Friday and will have Allagash White, Victory Swing Sesion Saison, Goose Island IPA and Flying Fish Farmhouse Ale on tap.

Update: New Liquor License App in the Window of Tapestry

Posted by Foobooz on January 3rd, 2013

Last night we were told of a liquor license application in the window of the former Tapestry/Adsum/Coquette/that Thai spot that lasted a month. By morning light, we found out the application is for 4400 Main Street Restaurant Enterprises LLC. Tracing that LLC’s phone number leads to a Manayunk fortune teller.

And frankly, someone whose business is to know the future, should know better.

UPDATE: A sleuthing Foobooz reader pointed out that 4400 Main Street was supposed to be Cervisia, the beer bar from the Agiato team. And it seems likely that they are just repurposing the LLC name for the 5th and Bainbridge location, which they came in to run after the transition to Tapestry.

The 15’x15’ octopus goes live in two days. Ralic’s on South will open its doors with a limited menu at 5 p.m. this Friday, the 7th. With seafood classics like Clams Casino, Crab Cakes, and Tuna Tartar, the menu will give a little insight to what Chef John Anninos hopes to bring to South Street.
