Philadelphia music icon Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson announced that Hybird, his and Stephen Starr’s new restaurant, will be opening this Saturday, May 18, in New York City’s Chelsea Market. The gourmet fast food restaurant will feature Questlove’s famous “Love’s Drumsticks,” truffled egg dumplings, tom yum cupcakes, and watermelon-jalapeño “Love Slush,” among other things.
Few things are more Philly than Questlove and Starr, so its a shame this place isn’t opening locally. But it is worth noting that Questlove recently followed a number of Philadelphia food accounts on twitter, so maybe Questlove is planning on bringing Hybird to Philly soon.

And as if it isn’t strange enough to find a formal portrait of Questlove made entirely out of noodles, what makes it double-weird is that said portrait was done by New York-based artist Julia Greene, but she was commissioned by the folks over at P.F. Chang’s Home Menu to construct the homage to the Roots drummer, food lover and Philly native.
Questo has nothing at all to do with P.F. Chang’s (and neither did Al Roker when his portrait got did), but spokesperson Dan Mazei insists that the company just “appreciates his food fandom, and thought his unique personality would look great…made of lo mein.”
We, too, dig Questlove’s commitment to the culinary arts, but wonder where he was during last night’s Chinatown Night Market. He was supposed to debut his Quest Loves Food project at the event, but was nowhere to be seen.
Lucky for us, we got a taste of his “? Drumsticks” a couple weeks ago at Feastival and they were awesome. Would’ve been nice to get another hit last night, but who knows… Maybe the man was too busy sitting for his next portrait, in which he will be sculpted entirely out of ham.

It was the acrobats that screwed me up the most–the half-naked boys and girls literally swinging from the rafters at Pier 9 while Feastival was in full sprint. There were two of them right above the main bar, hanging low enough to snatch the top hat off a swell’s head or take the garnish off the top of my cocktail. A line of them danced in tutus along the side wall. There was a girl pouring upside-down glasses of champagne from her perch and others doing their Cirque du Soleil-style thing over the heads of the grazers working the tables of the 75 restaurants that showed up to feed everyone.
It was bizarre, disconcerting, intermittently magic when the music and the light and the smoke machines all hit some freak groove. But I never got accustomed to it. I mean, good for them. There’s probably not a lot of work for people whose one big skill is swinging around on a rope in their underpants (especially now that Barnes & Noble is closing, leaving so many dancers, artists, writers and liberal arts majors out of a job), so I’m glad that they made the scene, but still…

?uestlove joins the likes of Marc Vetri, Ryan Madson, and Pierre Calmels of Bibou with his induction into the Celebrity Roll hall of fame at Zama (which won a Best of Philly award this year for–you guessed it–it’s celebrity-themed hand-rolls).
The Roots’ star apparently inspires the essence of cheesesteaks since his roll (named “The Drum Roll”) is basically a fancy, tubular cheesesteak made with Washugyu beef (think of it as super-Wagyu), provolone, bibb lettuce and aioli, wrapped in red pepper flake soy paper. Classy, right? And yes, you actually can order it “wit’ or wit’out” sauteed onions.
With the roll appearing on next week’s menu, those ordering it can also feel good about the $1 donation for each roll sold going to Harlem Village Academies, which is ?uestlove’s charity of choice. And while you’re waiting, check out the video of his ?uest-ness in the kitchen with chef Zama lending a hand in the creation of the Drum Roll.

If the path of excess leads to the palace of wisdom, then last night’s judges panel, myself included, are now experts in food. To pick (pun totally intended) this year’s backstage chef for the Roots Picnic, ?uestlove and his people selected nine finalists to compete in a 5-course cook-off from a pool of entries sent to @cook4quest. If you do the math, that means we had to score an elastic pants-worthy 54 courses. I’ll be submitting my audition tape for The Biggest Loser later this week.
