Questlove and Starr Set to Open Hybird

Posted by Sam Bloch on May 15th, 2013

QuestLove-Hybird_026_RF_Crop

Philadelphia music icon Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson announced that Hybird, his and Stephen Starr’s new restaurant, will be opening this Saturday, May 18, in New York City’s Chelsea Market. The gourmet fast food restaurant will feature Questlove’s famous “Love’s Drumsticks,” truffled egg dumplings, tom yum cupcakes, and watermelon-jalapeño “Love Slush,” among other things.

Few things are more Philly than Questlove and Starr, so its a shame this place isn’t opening locally. But it is worth noting that Questlove recently followed a number of Philadelphia food accounts on twitter, so maybe Questlove is planning on bringing Hybird to Philly soon.

HyBird, Questlove’s Food Concept Opening in New York with Stephen Starr

Posted by Foobooz on April 3rd, 2013

hybird

Philadelphia’s Questlove and Stephen Starr are joining forces to open Hybird, a fried chicken, dumplings and cupcakes stand in New York’s Chelsea Market. Look for the kiosk to open in early May.

Questlove has been toying with starting a food operation for a couple of years now, having fed drumsticks to gleeful Feastival eaters and Night Market VIPs. But now there’s something concrete and we have to wonder, can a Philadelphia location be far behind?

We hope not.

Night Market with ?uest Loves Food Pop-Up

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on June 12th, 2012

Everyone’s favorite street food gathering is scheduled to make an appearance on June 28th at 9th St. and Washington Ave from 6-10pm. Not only will the Night Market be bringing its under-$5 eats to this stretch of blacktop, but it will also be the debut of a ?uest Loves Food Pop-Up, the long-anticipated food project of The Roots’ ?uestlove.

$55 gets you into the ?uest Loves Food Pop-Up and guarantees you access to the fabled “Love’s Drumsticks”, ?uest’s own fried chicken. The ticket price also includes more food and music curated by ?uest himself, as well as cocktails made with local liquors from Philadelphia Distillers and mixed up by the guys at Farmers’ Cabinet. With Art Philadelphia will be bringing some local art along with them (should we even ask how?) and local beer will be provided by Yards Brewing Co.

Keep in mind, $55 gets you all that access to the ?uest Loves Food Pop-Up but the $75 PLUS pass gets you a…Food Trust t-shirt and a Night Market souvenir cup….Yeah, just go with the regular pass.

Tickets are limited and can be bought here.

Coming Soon: Questlove’s Red Velvet Cupcakes

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on April 19th, 2012

Earlier this week, I interviewed Roots drummer Questlove about a little bit of everything, from the Tupac hologram (later exposed as a non-hologram sham) and why he paid $59.99 to use the toilet at Best Western to the future of the Philadelphia Orchestra and how Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring relates to Public Enemy.

But we also talked about food, most notably why it’s okay for him to sell fried chicken (everyone who’s tried his rarely available Drumsticks says that they’re awesome) when Mary J. Blige gets called out for shilling for Burger King’s Chicken Snack Wrap.

Just Because It’s Awesome: Questlove, Made Out Of Noodles

Posted by Jason Sheehan on October 7th, 2011

And as if it isn’t strange enough to find a formal portrait of Questlove made entirely out of noodles, what makes it double-weird is that said portrait was done by New York-based artist Julia Greene, but she was commissioned by the folks over at P.F. Chang’s Home Menu to construct the homage to the Roots drummer, food lover and Philly native.

Questo has nothing at all to do with P.F. Chang’s (and neither did Al Roker when his portrait got did), but spokesperson Dan Mazei insists that the company just “appreciates his food fandom, and thought his unique personality would look great…made of lo mein.”

We, too, dig Questlove’s commitment to the culinary arts, but wonder where he was during last night’s Chinatown Night Market. He was supposed to debut his Quest Loves Food project at the event, but was nowhere to be seen.

Lucky for us, we got a taste of his “? Drumsticks” a couple weeks ago at Feastival and they were awesome. Would’ve been nice to get another hit last night, but who knows… Maybe the man was too busy sitting for his next portrait, in which he will be sculpted entirely out of ham.

Feastival 2011: That’s A Wrap

Posted by Jason Sheehan on September 15th, 2011

It was the acrobats that screwed me up the most–the half-naked boys and girls literally swinging from the rafters at Pier 9 while Feastival was in full sprint. There were two of them right above the main bar, hanging low enough to snatch the top hat off a swell’s head or take the garnish off the top of my cocktail. A line of them danced in tutus along the side wall. There was a girl pouring upside-down glasses of champagne from her perch and others doing their Cirque du Soleil-style thing over the heads of the grazers working the tables of the 75 restaurants that showed up to feed everyone.

It was bizarre, disconcerting, intermittently magic when the music and the light and the smoke machines all hit some freak groove. But I never got accustomed to it. I mean, good for them. There’s probably not a lot of work for people whose one big skill is swinging around on a rope in their underpants (especially now that Barnes & Noble is closing, leaving so many dancers, artists, writers and liberal arts majors out of a job), so I’m glad that they made the scene, but still…

Posted by Jason Sheehan on August 5th, 2011

We know… It’s hard to focus on anything else now that Shark Week is here. But in addition to coming up with some pretty cool shark-related food events of our own, we here at Foobooz Headquarters have been busily keeping track of all the best restaurant news happening in (and around) Philly. And between the donut prostitutes in New Jersey, the impending opening of Cook in Rittenhouse Square, all the action at Talula’s Garden and the huge number of new breweries coming to the Best Beer Drinking City in America (that would be us), we think it’s been a very interesting week.

?uestlove Gets His Own Roll at Zama

Posted by Meghan Ross on August 3rd, 2011

?uestlove joins the likes of Marc Vetri, Ryan Madson, and Pierre Calmels of Bibou with his induction into the Celebrity Roll hall of fame at Zama (which won a Best of Philly award this year for–you guessed it–it’s celebrity-themed hand-rolls).

The Roots’ star apparently inspires the essence of cheesesteaks since his roll (named “The Drum Roll”)  is basically a fancy, tubular cheesesteak made with Washugyu beef (think of it as super-Wagyu), provolone, bibb lettuce and aioli, wrapped in red pepper flake soy paper. Classy, right? And yes, you actually can order it “wit’ or wit’out” sauteed onions.

With the roll appearing on next week’s menu, those ordering it can also feel good about the $1 donation for each roll sold going to Harlem Village Academies, which is ?uestlove’s charity of choice. And while you’re waiting, check out the video of his ?uest-ness in the kitchen with chef Zama lending a hand in the creation of the Drum Roll.

Roots Picnic Winner Crowned

Posted by Fidel Gastro on April 4th, 2011

If the path of excess leads to the palace of wisdom, then last night’s judges panel, myself included, are now experts in food.  To pick (pun totally intended) this year’s backstage chef for the Roots Picnic, ?uestlove and his people selected nine finalists to compete in a 5-course cook-off from a pool of entries sent to @cook4quest.  If you do the math, that means we had to score an elastic pants-worthy 54 courses.  I’ll be submitting my audition tape for The Biggest Loser later this week.
