Raw Out At Piazza

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on January 3rd, 2012

It seems like just months ago that I was telling you about Sansom Street sushi joint Raw getting an outpost at Bart Blastein’s mixed-use 80,000-square foot revolving door aka The Piazza at Schmidts, replacing Shola Olunloyo’s ill-fated Speck project. Oh wait. That’s because it was just months ago. Well, after what I hear was one helluva New Years’ Eve party at the complex (even my Enterprise car rental guy in Upper Darby said so), word comes that Raw is no longer open for business. Best Parts of Raw Are Not Raw

Posted by Foobooz on November 21st, 2011

Craig LaBan visits Raw Sushi and Sake Lounge on the Piazza at Schmidts and isn’t really thrilled with the restaurant. It sounds like owner Tony Rim is in the same boat, so the most interesting part of the review is what changes are being made. For one, Raw is debuting a robata (grilled meat) tent outside.

It’s an odd stroke of trendy turnabout that a touch of the Night Market/pop-up craze could somehow save a big-ticket restaurant. But “Occupy Piazza” just might work ….

When it’s open, 20 seats will be able to cook their own skewers at a Korean-style table grill. There will also be soups available – a ramen noodle bowl that’s been in the works (which I didn’t taste), as well as some udon (which I did), the rope-thick chewy noodles basking in a pristine broth with plump shrimp and mushrooms.

Vetri Awaits Sushi

Posted by Foobooz on June 2nd, 2011

We’re sure this is just a photo of Marc Vetri hoping to score some sushi as he peers into the former Speck (future Raw) on the Piazza at Schmidts. Right? Right?

We also love that Vetri has his apron on, man is just ready to cook.

Raw At The Piazza: I Guess You Could Call It Official

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 10th, 2011

Just in case there are any doubters out there about Raw Sushi & Sake Lounge taking over the Speck space at the Piazza. There sure are plenty of haters.

UPDATE: Phoodie says an early June opening.

And the Speck Replacement at the Piazza Is…

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 9th, 2011

In March, we broke the unfortunate news that the fragile Shola Olunloyo-Bart Blatstein alliance at the Piazza in Northern Liberties had fractured, with Olunloyo locked out of Speck, the restaurant he had been developing for ages and was days away from opening. In the ensuing weeks, we got lots of tips about this chef (Kevin Sbraga) or that chef (Jose Garces, pictured looking at the Speck space) replacing Olunloyo as Blatstein’s tenant. But none those tips checked out. Until today. Read the rest of this entry »

APO Transforming to “the Corner”

Posted by Foobooz on October 4th, 2010

Philly Chit Chat tipped us off regarding the future of APO Bar + Lounge. It will be reopening within weeks as The Corner.

No word on the concept, but Raw’s owner, Tony Rim will be running the place.

The photo above, taken Sunday morning shows that they are wasting no time transforming the space.

Midtown Village Fall Festival

Posted by Foobooz on October 1st, 2010

The 5th annual Midtown Village Fall Festival is set for this Saturday. From noon to 8pm there will be food, drink, music and shopping.

This year will be the biggest yet, if for no other reason than seven new eateries have opened in the Midtown Village (Tweed, Zavino, Barbuzzo, Sampan, Fuel, Jake’s Sandwich Board, and Bar).

Highlights include:

  • Raw Sushi will host its annual Sumo Wrestling competition where festival-goers up for a challenge can put on a suit and hop into the ring.
  • Finn McCool’s will encourage crowds to try their hand at soaking someone in a Dunk Tank. In ddition to hot pork sandwiches,
  • Jake’s Sandwich Board will have a whole pig in front of their estaurant. Those who kiss the pig will contribute to Jefferson Hospital.
  • McGillin’s Olde Ale House will be celebrating the Grand Finale of a month-long Oktoberfest celebration on Drury Street.

Fall Festival At 13th & Sansom

Posted by Foobooz on September 12th, 2007

13th and Sansom Fall Festival

Don’t even think about missing the Fall Festival at 13th and Sansom Saturday, September 29th. The centerpiece of the festival is Ludwig’s Oktoberfest which is always a can’t miss event. But last year the event was expanded with an “around the world in 80 yards” theme that might be a bunch of marketing mumbo-jumbo but whatever, it’s a good reason to close down some streets and have a big party. In addition to Ludwig’s, Fergies, Raw, McGillin’s, Vintage and El Vez among others all contribute to a great time.
