The Festival of Forgotten Foods

Posted by Alex Tewfik on April 10th, 2013

We forget.

It’s easy to do so when there’s so much in motion. We’ve gone from a point of aversion to a point of destination, and it’s because we’re a city, exploding. So we forget. We forget about our roots, our upbringing, our culinary ancestry in a region so maximally filled with absolutely nothing. We’ve emerged from shadows casted by the once ever-present limelight of our neighboring cities, and people are starting to stare.

So let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s remember.

Reading Terminal Market is hosting its annual Festival of Forgotten Foods on April 27th, from 10 am-4 pm in the Center Court. It’ll be a time of reminiscence, a tribute to the foods that once were, and an appreciation to regional cuisines lost in history. They’re bringing it all back, from fried catfish and waffles to teaberry ice cream, with all the creepy hillbilly goodies in between.

And when it’s all said and done, go eat a DiNic’s roast pork, and then later on, eat dinner at Vetri, or Zahav, or Vedge, or some other swanky joint—just as long as you keep things chronologically accurate. We have to know where we’ve come from to know where we’re going, and because where we’re going…

Bob Libkind, who writes the blog, Robert’s Market Report has the 411 on Bieler’s Donuts and Salads, a replacement to AJ Pickle Patch & Salads. In coming weeks, the Bieler family, which also owns Bieler’s Bakery will reconfigure the AJ stand  to add fresh-made doughnuts.

Bieler’s Donuts & Salads will mark the first time doughnuts will be regularly made at the Market in years, though they have been a very popular special offering during the Market’s Pennsylvania DutchFestival.

Tuesday is All-You-Can-Eat Snow Crabs at the Field House

Posted by Alex Tewfik on March 26th, 2013

Snow crabs tend to be weirdly addicting. You crack one open, suck it down, and sooner or later you’re ten deep, you’re covered in crab carcasses, and you have no idea what year it is.

At least that’s been the constant on my end…

The Convention Center’s recently renovated sports bar/beer hall, Field House, is now offering snow crabs every Tuesday, all you can eat of them. For $25, chef Andrew Brown (previously of White Dog and Opa) will serve you an endless supply of snow crab, fries, and drawn butter. They’re an easy pair with  local crafts too, so grab a long table, throw down some beers, and gluttonize in snow crabs forever.

Broccoli Rabe Shortage Hits Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on January 14th, 2013

Robert’s Market Report points us to the jarring news that there is a broccoli and broccoli rabe shortage in the United States. Drought conditions in the Southwest United States has demand outstripping supply.

According to the Reading Terminal’s Iovine Bros., the shortage is expected to last a good four or five weeks. And with the Philadelphia Auto Show descending on the Reading Terminal Market, all those Dinic’s sandwiches might be missing their signature greens.
