Is “Steven Starr” Opening A Mexican Restaurant In Fishtown?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 7th, 2013

stephen_starr

Uh…maybe? Thanks to one of our faithful tipsters, we got a link to this hi-LARIOUS real estate blog post/property listing this morning, which seems to imply that it’s a done deal and that Starr himself is already in the kitchen making the tamales. Dig it:

This property [1525-27 Frankford Avenue] is a prime example of the Real Estate lingo Location! Location! Location! It is in the center of the The Frankford Avenue Arts Corridor. Neighborhoods that are touched by rich history, exciting new development and Investment Opportunities. A diverse mix of artists, working families, and young professionals that line the area of Fishtown, East Kensington, and Port Richmond who support Frankford Avenue and call it home. This is where you want to open your new or existing business. As you know, businesses feed off of each other and along the Frankford Ave Corridor, we have many successful businesses such as Frankford Hall by “Steven Starr”, Johnny Brenda’s, East Side Bottle Cap featuring a variety of micro brews, art studios, coffee shops and more. New businesses are popping up everyday on this up and coming Corridor, one being Steven Starrs latest project, a Mexican Themed Restaurant just 200 ft. away from this prime location. Get it while the price is right, the market is on the rise!

Oh, there is just so much to make fun of here. Like the random capitalization, the awesome misspellings, the fact that “Steven Starr” is apparently an imaginary character requiring quotes around his name. Or the fascinating information on East Side Bottle Cap which apparently features “micro brews, art studios, coffee shops and more.” I want to go to there!

But anyway, being the thorough researchers that we are over here at Foobooz World HQ, we put a call in to Starr this morning and asked two questions. First, has he recently changed the spelling of his name for no good reason (no), and second, is he opening a Mexican restaurant in Fishtown?

And that’s where things got weird.

Vetri to New Jersey?

Posted by Foobooz on October 14th, 2011

Moorestown Mall owner PREIT has announced it has a signed letter of intent with Marc Vetri to open a restaurant at the New Jersey mall. Michael Klein reports it would be a scaled down version of Osteria.

PREIT is attempting to upgrade the Moorestown mall by adding high-end dining destinations. Moorestown is a dry town and a November ballot measure would allow PREIT to purchase four liquor licenses for the mall at $1 million each (twice what a recent liquor license in Cherry Hill went for).

So in November will Moorestown voters be lured by the promise of prosciutto di parma topped pizzas and encouraged to vote to allow the mall to offer liquor? With the threat of rising property taxes or cuts to schools and local services, four liquor licenses for the mall seems an attractive option for creating revenue. Having a chef of Vetri’s status onboard is one heck of an ace-in-the-hole.

What Starr on South Broad Could Mean

Posted by Foobooz on June 17th, 2010

With Stephen Starr in agreement to purchase the Broad Street Diner we cannot help but think what might be coming to Broad Street south of Washington.

With apologies to the original Restaurant Yenta, here are some of our wishes for South Broad.

Say What? Wine Bar to Liberty Place?

Posted by Foobooz on January 14th, 2010

Michael Klein is reporting that Vintage Irving, a New York wine bar is close to signing a lease at the Shops at Liberty Place.

What doesn’t make sense is that the bar would be on the second floor by the food court where the Dale & Thomas popcorn store had been located. First off that doesn’t seem like a very big space and secondly, why open a wine bar that is completely isolated from street traffic and thirdly, there’s not much in traffic on the second floor there after lunchtime and certainly not at night when you would expect a wine bar to be busiest.

The Khyber is Listed for Sale, Has History

Posted by Foobooz on January 7th, 2010

The Khyber

This BizBuySell ad confirmed what we have heard whispered for months, the Khyber is for sale. Or if you prefer this version of the story, it was for sale. But what we had no idea about until Joe Sixpack blogged about it, is that its bar (pictured above) is from the Brewers Building at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial.

Here are some cool factoids about the 1876 Centennial and the Brewers Pavillion:

  • The Brewers Building was not some shack.
  • The hall featured a statue of King Gambrinus, German patron saint of brewing
  • Anheuser Busch won its first medal for lager at the Expo. The medal can be seen in this ad.

Psst. Wanna buy the Khyber? [The Insider]

Matchmaking: Restaurants & Real Estate

Posted by Kirsten Henri on February 15th, 2008

Your restaurant yenta is back, pairing vacant spaces that yearn for occupancy with clever restaurants that do not yet exist. And all for free!

This space, formerly the headquarters of the United Way, is right down the street from Vetri, Valanni and Mercato on the cusp of the Midtown Gayborhood and it boasts a highly desirable indoor courtyard! A perfect match here would involve, perhaps, an upscale bier garten to replace Ludwig’s, like the one that commenter DKH told us back in January that he wants to open and keeps dropping hints in our inbox about, but won’t actually give us any solid information on because he doesn’t have a location? And apparently is pulling the same shenanigans over at Food & Drinq? Bad form, DKH! You’ve been a very naughty commenter…

Speaking of the Midtown Gayborhood, it looks like the 12th Air Command may be up for sale for $2.8 mil. Here’s an opportunity for a shrewd restaurateur to take flight! Did we mention it’s Bad Pun Friday here at foobooz? We’d like to see Starr in here. Yep, that’s right, Starr. He’s done everything else but a gay bar, so why not?

Perhaps something more hetero is more your cup of Sazerac? What could be more hetero than Manayunk? It appears that New Orleans-ish Bourbon Blue is on the market. This one is tough. We’re not sure what should be done with this cavernous space. How about turning it into an indoor market and cafe? It’s not like Manayunk needs another bar anyway.

Matchmaking: Restaurants & Real Estate

Posted by Kirsten Henri on January 29th, 2008

132008_dscf3347.JPG

Our dream job involves matching up real estate and restaurateurs. We find a location, we find a restaurateur, we tell them what concept will work there (this also involves us traveling around the world for research purposes) then everybody gives us money and we go away.  Does such a job exist? In the meantime, we do it for free in an imaginary world for your pleasure…

Now this would be a very interesting spot for Marc Vetri and/or Stephen Starr to open a restaurant. What, you think Vetri can’t rock South Broad like he’s rocking North Broad?

Actually, if we had our way, our favorite Mark–Mark Bee–would have his way with the former Broad Street Diner, although he seems to have enough on his plate with his chef troubles at Silk City. Perhaps the Royal Tavern/Cantina crew might like to step up?
