Where We’re Eating: Rembrandt’s in Fairmount

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on March 11th, 2013

rembrandts-exterior

I heard complaints from three separate regulars of Rembrandt’s, that this longtime neighborhood tavern had become too “precious” since bringing in a fancy chef from Buddakan, and was screwing things up by changing old menu favorites. “Bring back my turkey burger!” insisted one. On my visit, things started off rough with imperfectly shucked warm oysters and an unpalatable pickle plate, but steadily improved with the beet salad, bacon-wrapped dates and better-than-most crispy roast chicken. I can understand where my Fairmount friends are coming from, but if I lived nearby, I’d be back once a week for that bird alone.

Why Do So Many Restaurants Screw Up Oysters?

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on January 11th, 2013

Last night, I wound up at Rembrandt’s for dinner with a friend. The longtime Fairmount tavern recently brought in chef Nick Cassidy from Buddakan to spruce things up a bit, and I was curious to see whether change was a good thing for Rembrandt’s.

Rembrandt’s Comeback

Posted by Alex Tewfik on January 3rd, 2013

Rembrandt’s in Fairmount is hoping to keep up with Fairmount’s recent restaurant renaissance. Long a neighborhood institution, the restaurant has brought in some new guns to overhaul the menu.

A few months ago, Chef Nick Cassidy of Buddakan came to Rembrandt’s to help with the revitalization process. Gradually, over the past few months, he’s put together a comfortable menu with good portions and fair value. Rembrandt’s is closed today in preparation for the full menu to go live tomorrow, Friday, January 4th.

Six Pack: Empanadas In Philly

Posted by Maegan Cadet on November 6th, 2012

One could argue that the two best things in the world are meat and fried food. If you are the type of person who would make such an argument, then feast your eyes on the empanada.

The empanada is a crispy pastry stuffed with meat, cheese, fruit, or anything in between, depending on the chef. Most typically served in Latin cuisine, the empanada can count as a small snack or an appetizer leading up to a gut-busting meal.

Luckily for you, Philadelphia has several options to satisfy any one of your empanada cravings.

Six Pack: Bacon Bacon Bacon

Posted by Maegan Cadet on October 12th, 2012

Editor’s Note: This week, we’re going to be introducing our new army of interns to you, the Foobooz readership. And it occurred to us that what better way for you to get to know them a little then for them to tell you all about something they loved to eat? Thus, we set them each to assembling their own Foobooz Six Pack, focusing on something they craved.

For our final Six Pack this week, we’d like to introduce Maegan Cadet–a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Fine Arts. She’ll eat anything saturated with carbs and will drink anything with caffeine. While she is a self-professed “pretend foodie,” she prides herself in knowing a good croissant when she tastes one.

Here’s her introductory Six Pack: Three courses of bacon-wrapped, bacon-spiked and bacon-infused goodness, proving that one can never have enough bacon (that is, until it runs out).

New Chef at City Tap House Debuts With Dining Days Menu

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 12th, 2012

As you know University City Dining Days begins this week and City Tap House is participating. But what is special about this particular menu is that it was created under their new reigning chef, Robert Legget.

Formerly of Rembrandt’s, Legget has moved over to City Tap House and has brought his inspired menu creation with him. Part of the $30 bracket for the two-week long deal are tea-smoked pork belly sticks, ten spiced wings, a bacon-and-egg ice cream, and an “avenue hoagie” with avocado and pickled veggies. Certainly looks like Legget is bringing a refreshing change to the Tap House.

Six Pack: Where To Get Your Pastrami Fix in Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on March 7th, 2012

Pastrami is having a bit of a moment. We’re importing it from New York. Its spices are finding their way onto fish and chicken wings. And now we’re celebrating Philadelphia’s pastrami explosion (which, not for nothing, would be a great name for a band) with our first Foobooz Six Pack: Six places to score pastrami from Fairmount to the Reading Terminal Market.

Get That Spicy Crunch with Lemon Hill’s Pastrami-Spiced Chicken Wings

Mitch Prensky came up with the genius idea of coating chicken wings in pastrami spices. Dipped into the Thousand Island dressing, you have a bar snack that’s tough to beat.
