Restaurant Week Philadelphia

Don’t Miss This: 5 Courses for $35 At Time

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 31st, 2013

TimeBar

With just two nights left in Center City Restaurant Week, we’ve decided to call out individually excellent dishes (and menus) at participating restaurants–just to remind you, in case you haven’t yet had a chance to try them.

What’s that? You’ve been living in a hole for the past two weeks and haven’t yet gotten a chance to get out and experience Restaurant Week. Well, in order to make up for lost time, you could jump on over to Sansom Street where Time is offering up not just three or four courses, but FIVE–all for just $35. True, there are not a lot of options available, but still: It’s a helluva spread for what most folks will generally drop on just drinks. Check it out:

The $35 Challenge: Eat Like It’s Restaurant Week At Vernick Food & Drink

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 29th, 2013

$35 for three courses sounds like a helluva deal. And that’s what Restaurant Week is built around. But say you want to go somewhere awesome without having to deal with the crowds, the restrictions and the stressed-out wait staffs that are also a part of Restaurant Week. Is that possible?

It is, even if you happen to find yourself among the high heels and yappy dogs of Rittenhouse Square. Just aim yourself toward 21st and Walnut and deliver yourself into the hands of the crew at Vernick Food & Drink. Don’t believe you can get out of there with three courses for $35? Then check out the math:

  • Peas and bacon on toast $7
  • Crispy potatoes with shishito peppers $6
  • Pork blade steak with onion marmalade and sauteed mustard greens $22

All that, and for a grand total of $35, on the nose. Granted, if you’re willing to go just a little bit higher you could opt for the fromage blanc with kumquats on toast ($7), then the mussels in Dijon broth ($14) and then the potato ravioli with braised lamb and long beans ($15) for a total of $36, but that’s just crazy talk. Why would anyone pay $36 for a three-course dinner at one of the 50 Best Restaurants in Philladelphia when they could head down to Bleu Martini on 2nd Street and get chicken fingers, Cajun salmon and a slice of cheesecake for $35?

Ugh.

Poll: What Do You Think About Restaurant Week?

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on January 22nd, 2013

It was ten years ago when the Center City District debuted Philadelphia’s Restaurant Week. These days, Restaurant Week is offered twice each year, and participating restaurants range from Amada and Zahav to Bridget Foy’s and Bleu Martini to relative newcomers like Spice 28 and Russet. Everyone seems to have an opinion about Restaurant Week (read today’s article on the Philly Post, where one restaurant publicist declares: “Fuck Restaurant Week!”), so we thought we’d ask what you think.

What's Your Take On Restaurant Week?

  • I hate it. (56%, 319 Votes)
  • I love it. (29%, 165 Votes)
  • I work it. (And hate it). (8%, 47 Votes)
  • I work it. (And don't mind it). (5%, 26 Votes)
  • I work it. (And love it). (2%, 13 Votes)

What To Eat During Center City Restaurant Week, Part 3: Chez Georges at Le Bec Fin

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 17th, 2013

 le-bec-carousel

It’s that time again. Center City Restaurant Week is nearly upon us, and in order to help you, the loyal Foobooz readers, get the most bang for your buck, we’ve combed through all the menus being offered by the 100-plus restaurants participating this year and come up with a few ideal meals for you to consider. And today, we’ve got…

Chez Georges at Le Bec Fin: Back To The Future

$35 a head.

$35 a head to eat at Le Bec Fin.

Okay, so you’re not up on the main floor (Chez Georges is downstairs), but you still go in through the same door. You still stand in the same lobby. You’ll still be being fed by the same kitchen crew that’s serving the swells upstairs for 4 times the price. And the menu that’s being offered for Restaurant Week at Chez Georges is really a kind of throwback to the French classics that once made Le Bec one of the greatest restaurants in America.

Not bad for thirty-five bucks. Even if you do have to eat in the basement. So let’s see how to get the best out of this menu, shall we?

What To Eat During Center City Restaurant Week, Part 2: Zahav

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 16th, 2013

Zahav Interior

It’s that time again. Center City Restaurant Week is nearly upon us, and in order to help you, the loyal Foobooz readers, get the most bang for your buck, we’ve combed through all the menus being offered by the 100-plus restaurants participating this year and come up with a few ideal meals for you to consider. And today, we’ve got…

Zahav: It Takes A Village

Okay, so I’m just saying make your reservations now, okay? We clear? Zahav is not the kind of place you’re going to just be able to walk into on any night during the next two weeks and expect to get anything but the stink-eye from the staff. The place is going to be busy, is what I’m saying. But there’s a reason for that. Of all the 100-some restaurants participating in this year’s Restaurant Week, Zahav is both one of the most popular and likely the one place that’s best prepared for being able to handle the onslaught coming their way.

Why? Because they handle serious crowds every single day. Also because the kitchen’s Restaurant Week menu is essentially identical to the menu they serve every other week. Like Barbuzzo yesterday, Zahav is offering four courses rather than the standard three (including one in which you’re offered two choices), and the list of options is large. If you’ve got plans at any point to go out with a group, Zahav is where you want to plant your team flag. Bring a party of four and, with a little sharing, you can eat virtually everything that’s great on the menu, all for $35 a head.

Let’s take a look at how the menu breaks down.
