Rex 1516

Okay, so maybe the middle of Philly Beer Week isn’t the best time to try to roll out a new happy hour program, but you can’t knock Rex 1516 for trying.
Starting tonight, the southern-fried South Street joint is rolling out a new bar snacks/cocktail scheme calibrated for hot summer evenings in the city. I mean, Mardi Gras Mondays with $6 hurricanes? That ain’t bad. A $10 beer flight on Thursdays (with 3 8oz pours)? Also a nice distraction. But offering $5 Newbold IPA/Rittenhouse Rye citywides on Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Now THAT is something worth getting excited about.
So is the new menu. A bunch of snacks, all of ‘em five bucks. Check out the menu after the jump.

Tonight and all day tomorrow the Mint Juleps are on special for $8 at Rex 1516. The South Street bar and restaurant has the timeless combo of whiskey, mint, sugar and club soda on its menu all the time but this weekend, a special derby version with peach-infused cognac, will also be available. Additionally the cocktail makes an appearance on Rex 1516′s dessert menu. The Mint Julep dessert pairs a rich mint chocolate pot de crème, topped with candied mint leaves and a pecan macaroon filled with whiskey cream frosting.
To accompany all that sweetness, Rex 1516 is offering bacon-scallion hush puppies with Cajun ailoi for just $5 for an order of five.

It’s been a helluva first year for Rex 1516, so they’re throwing a party.
The Rex 1516 one-year anniversary crawfish boil and jazz weekend kicked off last night with new executive chef Justin Swain offering up his specialty crawfish boil (two pounds of crawfish, andouille sausage, corn and red bliss potatoes) for $25 per person. Guests can also wash down their crawdaddies with Narragansett Pounders at $10 for a bucket of four.
The celebration takes place runs all weekend (April 18, 19 and 20) and features all of the Southern-inspired comfort food that has made Rex one of South Street’s best in the past year. And as if the food wasn’t enough, the Eric Wortham Trio will be performing live jazz on the outdoor patio each night. And at the bar, they’ll be slinging Hurricanes alongside a new menu of $5 spring bar snacks.

Picking the 50 best restaurants in a city shouldn’t be this tough. So what does it say about Philly that it was?
Rex 1516—the modern Southern restaurant on South Street whose kitchen entices diners with crawfish potpies and creamy low-country grits—is Philadelphia’s 51st-best restaurant.
This place, which is loved so dearly for lingering brunches of sweet-potato biscuits with chorizo gravy, for collard greens and cabbage salads with pork fat vinaigrette, never really made it onto the Big List. Oh, it had a brief rise into the high 40s during one pissed-off afternoon in which we scrapped almost everything from number 26 on and rebuilt the entire low end of the list from scratch. But almost since the start of our research, Rex has held tenaciously to its spot at number 51, fending off better-known challengers (Ela, Distrito, Rittenhouse Tavern) and scrappy upstarts (Hot Diggity, Russet, Bar Ferdinand under the command of David Ansill) alike.

Chef Regis Jansen who has been the chef at REX 1516 since it opened earlier this year is stepping down due to medical reasons. Jansen has been battling Cystic Fibrosis and is leaving his position to focus on his health.
Jansen says he is “incredibly grateful for the opportunity and support owners Jill Weber and Evan Malone have given me. Being part of the REX 1516 launch has been a true highlight in my culinary career.”
Jansen’s former line cook at 1601 and sous chef at REX 1516, Justin Swain will take over in the kitchen.
We wish Jansen the best.

With that mustache, he’d fit right in in Fishtown
This year marks 100 years since the death of famous Philadelphia architect Frank Furness. Furness’ designs were bold and eccentric during his life, and have since become revered not only in Philadelphia, but wherever his designs were produced. He was greatly influenced by the industrial designers of his day, often combining materials in new ways and designing on a scale meant to dazzle and break with the norm. Other famous architects like Louis Sullivan, who studied under Furness, and Frank Lloyd Wright were strongly influenced by his designs. Many of his important buildings, like the University of Pennsylvania Fisher Library and Drexel’s Paul Peck Center, still stand throughout Philadelphia–some housing popular restaurants.
