A fire broke out at the popular Adobe Cafe in Roxborough this morning. The fire, which appeared to begin in the kitchen damaged the exterior as well as the kitchen. No one was injured in the blaze and it isn’t clear when the Mitchell Street Adobe Cafe will be back in business.

Adam Erace heads to Leverington and Ridge and discovers Phu Fha Thai, an until now below the radar Thai restaurant in Roxborough. Erace even goes as far to say Phu Fha is the answer to our Thai discontent.
Do you know another Thai cook simmering a stockpot of the Chiang Mai specialty called hung lay curry? I don’t, but I’d wager none could top Phongchang’s version, as shiny and black as dark-chocolate ganache. Cloaking hunks of braised pork loin, the curry’s complex, long-lasting umami had me tasting tamarind, peanut, onion and chili all the way to the evening’s mango-sticky-rice finale.

Adam Erace shares Mel’s Kitchen with us, a year-old diner that already seems like it has been there forever.
When Mel’s finally opened in November, it was a takeout-only operation, but the neighborhood urged Hannon to add seating. In August, she put in butcher-block tables along the windows and installed the counter that (however ineffectively) divides the customers’ quarters from the kitchen. Today, Philadelphia University students and Umbria Street auto-body mechanics alike visit the 20 red-padded swivel stools for bacon-egg-and-cheeses, twice-monthly jambalaya and sandwiches stuffed with Italian-style roast pork, Hannon’s dad’s recipe.

Roxborough’s Dalessandro’s has turned 50 and even better the newest owners have brought it back to its former glory.
To stem the late-2000s “downhill” slide Steve the customer had noticed, Steve the owner installed new countertops and floors, a flat-screen TV, outdoor umbrella-table seating, and added Sunday hours and new Cheez Whiz and microbrew beer options changes that even former owner Sack calls “needed” and “cool.”

Adam Erace finds good barbecue at Holy Smoke in Roxborough. Just read his description of the chicken and waffles.
The classic Harlem-born duo takes time, Taylor says. A full 12 minutes to get the breast, thighs and drums fried perfectly. A 24-hour brine kept the meat so moist, a ShamWow couldn’t sop up all its juices, while the thorough dredging in well-seasoned flour gave each piece its crackly, golden coating. The meat arrived over a fluffy Belgian, its pockets like reservoirs for the deadly good mix of soft butter, hot sauce, maple syrup and chicken drippings.

Trey Popp travels to Roxborough in search of a bargain stuffed burger. And despite a few minor quibbles, that’s exactly what he finds at Roxburger.
It could have used a garnish — even just a few sliced onions would have beat the empty bun (turns out such toppings are available if you ask) — but the meat itself was moist, done exactly as I requested it, and the tasty filling somehow didn’t ooze all over the place, a hazard I’ve come to expect from the $10 jobs at Good Dog. For $5.75, doctored with a squirt of spicy brown mustard, it’s as good a deal as you’re likely to find.

When it comes to Roxborough there are just two cheesesteaks. And much like you’re either a
Pat’s or
Geno’s person, you’re either a
Chubby’s or
Dalessandro’s loyalist.
Interestingly the defenders of Chubby’s usually point to the hours, bar or cheese fries as the reason they prefer Chubby’s. But at Dalessandro’s, it’s all about the sandwich.
