Drew Lazor’s Dad’s Sandwich Now on the Menu at American Sardine Bar

Posted by Foobooz on January 2nd, 2013

Hawk Krall’s Gatsby Combo was the first collaboration sandwich on American Sardine Bar’s menu. This month chef Scott Schroeder has worked with food writer and ASB neighbor, Drew Lazor to produce “Dad’s Sandwich.”

The sandwich is made of turkey and pork roll, then topped with cheddar, jalapeño, dijonaise and barbecue potato chips. It’s served on a buttery grilled Texas toast. It will be on the menu at American Sardine Bar all month.

Hot Sandwiches Are Now Being Served at Wursthaus Schmitz

Posted by Foobooz on December 6th, 2012

When Wursthaus Schmitz opened just about a month ago there was much rejoicing but one thing was missing, hot sandwiches. Delays in getting the hood installed and inspected had delayed that part of the Reading Terminal Market German delikatessen.

But now that has all bee squared away and Brauhaus Schmitz’s sibling is offering five sandwiches including The Schmitz, a Brauhaus Schmitz bratwurst topped with mustard (eventually it will be served on a pretzel roll, but they’re waiting on the order).

Sandwiches Hit the Mark at Blue Belly BBQ

Posted by Foobooz on November 27th, 2012

Korean Beef at Blue Belly BBQ

Craig LaBan reviews Blue Belly BBQ on 6th Street on the border between Queen Village and Bella Vista and finds the sandwiches are the thing at Gene Giuffi’s small spot.

[T]he best reason to visit Blue Belly is ultimately its inventive sandwiches. That isn’t surprising, since it was initially conceived as a lunch option for the Bella Vista-Queen Village neighborhoods it serves.

And I find myself craving a number of Giuffi’s internationally inspired creations, at least with the appropriate sauce adjustments, as each one begged for just one more flavor flourish. A gingery Korean beef sandwich laced with spicy kimchi and crunchy fried shallots needed just a line of sweet barbecue sauce to be complete. The grilled jerk chicken breasts, aromatic with allspice, habanero powder, and the juicy pucker of pickled green tomatoes, demanded an extra spice-jolt of sambal-fired hot sauce. The slow-smoked cuminy lamb, so bold in its lambiness with radish and tortilla salad on top, needed vinegar sauce for moisture and tang.

Two Bells – Very Good

Blue Belly BBQ hours have recently been extended:

Sunday, Wed., Thurs: 12-8 p.m.
Friday, Saturday: 12-9 p.m.

Holy Crap! Grace Tavern Gets a New Menu Item!

Posted by Foobooz on February 14th, 2012

From the antique Bevador beer fridge to the awesome old illuminated Eagles ad, it feels like Grace Tavern hasn’t changed very much over the years. And for regulars, the comfort and complaint is that the same can be said about the menu. Since the bar opened in May of 2004 the only significant changes we can remember is that the original lobster sandwich morphed into a tuna sandwich and there was a time when you could count on cake for dessert. But now there is a new special on the menu, a grilled chicken sandwich served with lettuce, tomato and Grace’s exceptional bourbon mayonaise. Not exactly earth shattering, but when you place a chicken breast on the same magical grill that produces all of Grace’s lauded burgers, you have a grilled chicken sandwich worth talking about.

The chicken is on special right now but employees and customers alike are hoping it is a permanent addition.

Fishtown’s Soup Kitchen Provides Lunchtime Thrills

Posted by Foobooz on October 28th, 2011

Trey Popp calls Fishtown’s Soup Kitchen the best thing to happen to lunch all year.

Soup Kitchen’s sandwiches are two- and three-day productions. The pulled pork is bright with apple and cabbage slaw and jalapeño aioli. A walnut pesto bumps the goat cheese, avocado and arugula into contention for best vegetarian sandwich in town. Tomato-thyme mayo? Who ever thought a meatloaf-and-bacon sandwich could be improved on? And floating atop the soups are touches like roasted tomato oil (on the best cucumber soup of the summer) and nutmeg mousse (on a carrot-orange soup that, sadly, I missed).

Three Stars – Excellent

Would You Wanna Eat This?

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 12th, 2011

Proving once again what we’ve all known for so long — that pizzeria and Chinese restaurant owners do not share the same skill sets as photographers — here’s the photo used by The Original Thunderbird in Broomall to advertise its hoagies, which taste much better than they look here.
