Seafood In Philadelphia

We’re Number 1! In Fish Fraud, Anyway

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 22nd, 2013

FishFraud

Okay, so the graphic isn’t entirely fair (comparing the entire state of Pennsylvania to the city of Atlanta or the South Florida region is a little weird), but the underlying point of this Washington Post story on fish fraud is still valid: A lot of the time, when you think you’re buying a nice piece of tuna or snapper, you’re actually buying Peruvian bottom-feeding suckfish. Or something. And this is more likely to happen in Pennsylvania than anywhere else(ish).

Check out the full story below.

Buck-a-Shuck Monday Kicks Off at Doc Magrogan’s Tonight

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on August 6th, 2012

Given that yesterday was National Oyster Day, I popped over to the just opened University City outpost of Doc Magrogan’s to enjoy some bivalves and cocktails. (And the smoked fish dip and grilled mahi-mahi). Bartender Brian gave me the heads up that today is the first of Doc’s weekly Buck-a-Shuck Mondays, with a few varieties of oyster priced at just a dollar — not just during happy hour, but all night. Today’s buck-a-shuck selections: Sewansecott, James River and Delaware Bay.

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 27th, 2012

As lobster prices hit a 30 year-low and finding funny colored crustaceans is at an all-time high we’re starting to see the seasonal specialty all over. Though experts on the lobster glut say consumers outside of Maine won’t see price drops or specials it looks like these six Philly restaurants are bringing them to us anyway. Enjoy it while you can.

Doc Magrogan’s New Location Opening Soon

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 24th, 2012

This Friday, July 27th, Doc Magrogan’s Oyster House will be opening its newest location in University City to the public. The seafood joint will open its doors at 3432 Sansom Street and looks to complement the other restaurants on Sansom Row. The menu lists fresh seafood, a raw bar, a wine list, and craft beer served for lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating. This will be Doc Magrogan’s fourth location in the area and first in Philadelphia.

Spring Comes To The New Fish

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 23rd, 2012

Mike Stollenwerk‘s new Fish is not wasting any time in celebrating the turn of the seasons. With spring in the air, they are announcing Happy Hour deals (like $3 craft beers, buck-a-shuck oysters and a $6 cocktail of the day), and new spring-y additions to the menu (like redfish over grits with pressed chicken thigh, asparagus, oyster sauce and peanut relish, and handcut spaghetti with spring garlic and black trumpet mushrooms).

What’s more, they’re also teasing the opening of courtyard seating, saying only that it will be “opening soon.”

Uh, guys? It’s like 80 degrees today. Maybe you should hurry it up a little?
