Soft shells with shoshito and honey at Stateside
We here at Foobooz World Headquarters have a soft spot for soft shell crabs. Some might get bummed out by the thought of biting through a shell, devouring a whole animal and all that. But us, we love the idea of crabby taste without the hustle or frustration of shucking anything. And softshell season is officially upon us. The delicious creatures have been showing up on more menus around town over recent days.
Here are where we’ve spotted soft shell crabs »

Mica seems to want a bigger piece of the map.
First, they announced that Perrier will take hold of the restaurant’s reigns for a week in May, and now, they’re offering a four course oyster dinner this Wednesday and Thursday. The menu will have no geographic theme to it, with a menu ranging from Garganelli pasta to a po’ boy, but who cares? Oysters are great—especially when prepared with the culinary prowess of Chip Roman.

Chadd Jenkins alerted us to his new menu at Little Fish today. Each of the second courses look worth ordering, though we would have a hard time not ordering the cobia with lamb, garbanzo, olives, mint and chilis. Jenkins’ cobia and veal combination that we ate late last year, still stands out as one of our favorite dishes of 2012.

Snow crabs tend to be weirdly addicting. You crack one open, suck it down, and sooner or later you’re ten deep, you’re covered in crab carcasses, and you have no idea what year it is.
At least that’s been the constant on my end…
The Convention Center’s recently renovated sports bar/beer hall, Field House, is now offering snow crabs every Tuesday, all you can eat of them. For $25, chef Andrew Brown (previously of White Dog and Opa) will serve you an endless supply of snow crab, fries, and drawn butter. They’re an easy pair with local crafts too, so grab a long table, throw down some beers, and gluttonize in snow crabs forever.

Back in November, Oyster House owner Sam Mink added Dump Dinners to his restaurant’s offerings. It was supposed to be just a holiday thing but he’s kept it going. Available with 48-hours notice and designed for groups of six or more, the dinner is a fun way to feast. Steamed clams, mussels, Maine lobster, meguez sausage, kale and potatoes are all steamed up in a massive pot and “dumped” onto your newspaper-covered table.
The dinner is just $25 person and for an additional $15, the hungriest can add a chilled seafood raw bar sampler of oysters and clams on the half-shell. Complement the gluttony with a $20 per person all-you-can-drink option of Narrangansett pounders, house red and white wine and Oyster House’s signature Kelly’s Punch.

Craig LaBan likes what he sees from chef Terence Feury’s Tavro 13. Well everything except maybe the decor.
Feury at his best, especially with top-notch seafood, is worth the visit, whether for pristine Fire River oysters with Champagne mignonette, scallop ceviche enlivened with lime and chiles, or tender calamari marinated in serrano chile oil and seared on the plancha with pureed almonds and preserved lemon.
A swordfish over squash puree with pumpkin seeds was meltingly moist. Seared cod topped with parsley and potato chips provided the perfect flake-and-crunch contrast to the funky pairing of soft, potatoey salt cod brandade.

Scallop Noodles with with Heart of Palm and Gooseberry from an earlier Mica menu
Today and tomorrow, Mica in Chestnut Hill is hosting a special four-course scallop tasting. Chip Roman’s $45 tasting menu will include scallop ceviche and roasted scallop with quince, apple celery and white chocolate. Also on the menu are diver scallop noodles that made quite a splash when Roman’s Ela opened last year with Jason Cichonski in the kitchen.
