New Cafe Items at Magpie

Posted by Maegan Cadet on November 30th, 2012

Though the weather outside is not even close to frightful, Magpie is prepping early for Jack Frost’s return. Using espresso from La Colombe, Magpie has crafted several hot drinks perfect for fighting off the frost.

The Pie Latte is made from La Colombe espresso, warm milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, topped with buttery caramel sauce and pink peppercorn. Other available lattes include the Pumpkin Spice Latte, Vanilla Latte, Orange Cardamom Latte, Peppermint Latte and Peppermint Mocha, all with syrups created in-house.

Since Magpie is extending their Friday and Saturday hours to 10 p.m., try their ultra-chocolaty hot chocolate with house-made vanilla bean marshmallows to avoid late night caffeine. Unless, of course, you’re into that.

The 12 oz. lattes sell for $4.50 while the hot chocolate costs $3.50.

Ralic’s Steakhouse Philly Expansion Gets A Proper Name and A Date

Posted by Jason Sheehan on October 19th, 2012

In Haddonfield, Ralic’s is a boutique steakhouse. But when David Ralic jumps across the river to open on South Street, he’ll be bringing Philly a “seafood-themed sports bar” featuring a dozen 50-inch flatscreens, undersea murals and, apparently, an octopus the size of a small SUV mounted over the restaurant’s entrance.

The new joint will be called Ralic’s On South. Right now, the team is looking at a mid-November opening. And for any of you pros out there who’ve just been waiting for that perfect seafood-themed-giant-octopus-sports-bar gig to come along, this is your moment. The house is currently hiring for all positions, including exec chef.

Foobooz TV: Rex 1516 Opens Tonight

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 6th, 2012

Okay, so there have been a couple of delays. But we now have it on excellent authority that Rex 1516 will be opening for dinner service at 5pm tonight.

So with that in mind, here’s a quick look at the space, the kitchen, the crew hard at work and some of the food.

Of special note: That plate of shrimp and grits? One of the best I’ve had in quite some time. Even tasting it cold, after we were done shooting all the pretty, pretty pictures, they were still some of the best grits I’ve had in quite some time. And do you know why? Because chef Regis Jansen (who you can see in the video assembling said plate) comes to Philly by way of Alabama and knows his way around a bowl of grits. And that’s the thing with grits: You can’t cook them well if you’ve never tasted them prepared well–something Jansen knows in his bones.

His are phenomenal. Something to keep in mind if you decide to drop in at Rex tonight.

Rex 1516 Hits Another (Small) Snag

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 2nd, 2012

So first, word was that Rex 1516 (the small, Southern comfort food restaurant from the Jet Wine Bar team) was going to open on Thursday the 1st.

That didn’t happen for a few reasons, all of them very minor, and owners Jill Weber and Evan Malone decided that they were going to push off their opening for a couple days and let it happen over this weekend. We actually heard about this decision while sitting at the un-stocked bar at Rex, sampling some of chef Regis Jansen‘s sweet potato fries, fig-and-goat cheese crostini, his cheeseburger with onion jam and an absolutely killer plate of shrimp and grits topped with a fried egg which, even cold and eaten post-photo-shoot (see above), came off better than most other chefs’ grits do when eaten piping hot and perfect.

Now, though, there have been some other complications, and it looks like Rex won’t be opening this weekend either.
