Yelp on Catahoula

Local bloggers haven’t weighed in yet on this Cajun spot on Front Street but Yelp has.

A $5 Boilermaker of Jim Beam and the just-launched-in-PA Narragansett beer immediately won over Elite yelper Jon D. He does soak up some of that alcohol assault with “the hands-down best po-boys around, killer hush puppies and a menu I can’t wait to continue eating my way through.” [Yelp Philly]

“Sometimes a girl likes to be told what she likes,” confesses Elite Tina N. An “on-point” server who was quick to recommend duck jambalaya, crawfish bisque and banana fosters bread pudding had her “ready to call him daddy.” Ye-ow. [Yelp Philly]

“Butter is what binds this place together,” writes Emily M, who scored the first Yelp review of Catahoula on August 4. Barbecued shrimp, griddled cornbread and peach cobbler all drip with that sunny substance; hushpuppies studded with fresh corn get a dip in truffled tartar sauce for an equally heart-stopping riff on the Southern snack. 2 1/2 Bells for Square 1682

Posted by Foobooz on March 15th, 2010

square1682

Well it reads like a 2 1/2 bell review but Craig LaBan only does integers so Square 1682 gets a very nice 2-bell review.

If there is one unifying thread through Tellez’s palate, it is his vivid use of spice for flavor more than heat. Chiles and avocado bits jazz a yogurt raita sauce that accompanies a gorgeous shrimp cocktail poached with kaffir lime curry. Rusty, rich guajillo sauce and pineapple salsa give a tropical “al pastor” flair to the lobster tacos (a more satisfying successor to those quesadillas). An Asian chile paste lends earthy heat to a barbecue sauce that slicks the tender lamb short ribs on the bar menu. A slow-roasted shred of pork carnitas, meanwhile, adds a savory Mexican accent to the seared black cod over creamy polenta.

Two Bells – Very Good

Square 1682 Is A Trip Around The World

The plethora of culinary influences has Trey Popp thinking dinner disaster but after a meal full of exotic twists and turns, he’s a believer in Guillermo Tellez’ Square 1682.

In a restaurant scene increasingly dominated by paeans to the “authentic” or the highly specific, Tellez’s multi-culti grab bag is refreshing, delicious and fun. Complexity and contradiction make for rich architecture. At Square 1682, you may find that they can also produce a great meal.
