Earlier this week Philadelphia magazine food editor Jason Sheehan and I sat down at the office (it’s a tough job) to try Budweiser’s brand new Black Crown beer. Black Crown is making its marketing debut during the Super Bowl and we wanted to share what we thought of the beer. Black Crown is the result of 25,000 votes in a project Anheuser Busch called “Project 12.” The experiment had twelve master brewers setting out to create a new beer that was consistent with the Budweiser name. The winner of the exercise was from Los Angeles and that beer is now Budweiser Black Crown. Black Crown uses the same yeast strain that Adolphus Busch used in the original Budweiser back in 1876 and like the original Bud Heavy, it is also beechwood aged. The beer weighs in at 6% alcohol by volume and promises more taste.
Until the Super Bowl, there is just this short Budweiser Black Crown preview video to whet your appetite. Well that video and the one Jason and I did while tasting the beer. Bonus points if you get the reference we ran with in making the video.

Not heading to a Super Bowl Party? Then these bars will offer you plenty of deals and lots of Maryland versus California beer options.
With no Eagles in the Super Bowl, the local angle has been primarily about Ravens quarterback and South Jersey native, Joe Flacco. But MilkBoy provides another local hook. MilkBoy The Studio composed, performed and produced the original music, as well as handled the audio post-production for the Century 21 commercials airing before and during the Super Bowl. MilkBoy at 11th and Chestnut will be celebrating, by offering $2 you-call-it shots every time one of the commercials runs.

Make no mistake about it: unless you live in one of the two cities represented in this weekend’s Super Bowl, Sunday’s big game is not really about football. Rather, for most, it represents an excuse to get together with friends, ooh-and-ah over the host’s new 500-inch flat-screen, and drink beer. Lots and lots of beer.
And this would be a delightful scenario but for one fact: too many craft beer drinkers still risk being alienated by the proliferation of watery domestic brews at the parties they attend–or even host. To rectify this abomination, a craft beer fan should turn a Super Bowl party into an opportunity to force, er, encourage his or her friends to come over to the crafty side. How? Turn drinking into a game.

Normally Amis does their monthly industry night on the first Monday of the month, but in February they have something different planned. On Super Bowl Sunday Marc Vetri’s trattoria is going to be throwing an industry brunch.
On Brad Spence’s menu will be soft scramble eggs, rotini with breakfast sausage, house-made bacon, caponata with toast and something called Jersey cannonballs. The free food and drink specials run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Just bring a current pay stub to show at the door.
