Chef Sam Yoon, who was the master sushi chef at Midtown Village’s Raw has gone out on his own and opened Kidari at 1824 South Street. The location was previously Pinky’s, Sunny Point and most recently, Umai Cafe. Through the power of a paint roller and a new sushi bar, the space has been transformed into a smart looking BYOB.
The menu features soups, small cooked and raw small plates, salads, maki, terayaki and specialty rolls.

If you still think Manayunk is a culinary wasteland, you’re wrong. Oh, there’s plenty of bad. But there’s also Clark Gilbert’s fine Italian destination Gemelli (which recently became Bisou), and Nongyao “Moon” Kraputhong’s always-reliable Chabaa Thai. And now Kraputhong has added Yanako, an elegant, tranquil Japanese BYO to the equation. The cooked food is fine, but the offerings from the sushi bar are truly excellent. The rolls tend to be complex, which is just the way we like them. And if the live uni and top-shelf o-toro tuna belly are available, you’d be a fool not to order them.

Numa Sushi Bar had a sign posted that they were closing on Tuesday, January 15th. Oddly they were still operating on Wednesday but they did bail out on Restaurant Week. Michael Klein is speculating that the bi-level sushi bar that succeeded Moshi Moshi Sushi Bar might just be the location of Spike Mendelsohn’s Good Stuff Eatery.
In an interview with Eater, Mendelsohn said he had settled on a location ”on Walnut. Around that area. But it’s bad luck to give out the specific address.” Mendelsohn also said it would take a four-month build-out to open the burger joint.
If Good Stuff Eatery does indeed open on 18th Street, it will be the latest opening that makes that stretch one of the best lunch rows in Philadelphia with everything from ramen to vegan.

University City’s Pod gives itself an update, adding new cooked items and with the help of chef Makoto, chef and partner of Stephen Starr’s Makoto in Miami, a refresh on the sushi menu as well.
Each piece of sushi is now topped with a garnish to complement the texture and flavor of the fish. There are now also specialty nigiri rolls, including the “Vegan Stephen,” made with tempura zucchini, avocado, kanpyo squash, eggplant and roasted pepper.

It looks like the Dragons are jumping on the noodle bandwagon. Drexel University is installing Market 16 & Noodle Bar at 34th and Market in the first floor of the campus parking garage. The Noodle Bar will provide tea and sushi in addition to its titular dish.
Named after the parking garage’s number on the official campus map, Market 16 will provide fresh produce and “global flavors” to the area. The opening date is this fall despite construction looking very preliminary at the moment. Dragons like myself can cross their fingers for some student-oriented pricing a bit closer to home than Penn’s Fresh Grocer.
