Could Hostess’ Demise be Tastykake’s Gain?

Posted by Alex Tewfik on November 27th, 2012

This is our moment, Philadelphia. We’re in a position to be America’s savior, to rescue ourselves from our nation’s most recent upset, to be the face of something really special. We have in our possession something that replaces the unreplaceable, something that stands comfortably in bigger shoes, something that can effortlessly hold up America’s legendary obesity epidemic on a grandiose scale.

We have the Tastykake.

Since the Hostess brand’s bankruptcy liquidation, there’s been a void in the marketplace, and Tastykake looks to be the answer.

Because Too Much Is Never Enough: Tastykake and Hershey’s, Together At Last

Posted by Jason Sheehan on October 16th, 2012

Over on the Philly Post, they are telling you what it is that’s going to be making you fat this season. Namely, an unholy union between Pennsylvania’s two most famous purveyors of caloric joy.

Philadelphia-based Tastykake has joined forces with The Hershey Company to Kandy Bar Kakes, the most fearsome combination of Pennsylvania-based sweet treats it is possible to imagine, ever. The varieties of Kandy Bar Kake include S’mores Kandy Bar Kake made with Hershey’s Cocoa, Peanut Butter Kandy Bar Kake made with Reese’s Peanut Butter, and Peppermint Kandy Bar Kake made with York peppermint patty flavor.

There is something about that that’s attractive and horrifying, both at the same time. And you can read all about it over on the Philly Post.

MyPlate Replaces Food Pyramid, We Replace MyPlate

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 3rd, 2011

Months of work. $2 million dollars. 4,500 focus group participants. The loving attention of Tom Vilsack, the Department of Agriculture, Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity task force and Surgeon General Regina Benjamin. And this is what we get to replace the food pyramid? A circle divided four ways?

Jesus…

As mentioned a couple days ago, the Obama administration has decided to cast down the two-decades-old food pyramid in favor of a simpler, easier-to-understand graph called “MyPlate.” It was supposed to alleviate the confusion and controversy that has (apparently) dogged the classic pyramid since its inception, and present to all and sundry a clear message on how they are supposed to eat in order to not become the sorts of land whales who always seem to end up as a graphic on the nightly news whenever they want to do a story on obesity in America.

Et tu, Amoroso? Layoff Notices Go Out For Philly Drivers

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 19th, 2011

Okay, so we get it. Times are friggin’ tough. But first it was the news last week that Tasty Baking Company had been bought (and thereby saved) by Georgia-based Flowers Foods. And now today, word is just getting out that Amoroso’s has given 60-day layoff notices to all the drivers at its Southwest Philadelphia bakery. According to the Inquirer, there is also now a very real fear that Amoroso’s may also be looking to close the bakery at 55th and Baltimore completely, which would move all production out of Philly and into New Jersey.

Greatest Hits and What You Missed: Vegans, Tastykakes, Whiskey and Flies

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 15th, 2011

“Just when we started hearing some things about the Farmer’s Daughter at Normandy Farm in Whitpain Township (former site of a restaurant from the missing-in-action Jim Coleman, who disappeared from there, WHYY’s Chef’s Table, and World Cafe Live all in 2010) that made us actually consider making the awful drive up to that part of Montgomery County, we find out that Corey Fair, the bull-riding Texas-born chef that started to turn things around for the property, is gone.

Although the original tip that came in at the end of last week suggested that this was a sudden departure (to the effect of: ‘something happened last night, and the chef is gone’), both Fair (pictured) and the folks behind the so corporately named Normandy Farm Hotel and Conference Center say that’s not the case…”

Want to know the real story? Check out “Chef Flees Farmer’s Daughter For The Big City, But Promises ‘A Flawless Transition‘” for the truth.
