Stephen Starr kicked off ThinkFest on Friday night in a conversation with
Philadelphia magazine editor
Tom McGrath. Of course he had several interesting things to share. Namely that he wants to open two boutique hotels in Philadelphia. One, in Fishtown where rooms could be had for $100 a night and another near Rittenhouse Square where the prices would presumably be higher. But that was far from the only quotes worth sharing.

I agree that there are not enough tiki bars in this town (or this country, or this world), but demanding more is not a Big Idea. Farm to table cocktails? No matter what you call them, I’m still going to want to drink a beer and a shot 9 times out of every 10 times I find myself on the happy side of the long oak. Turning the entire Piazza at Schmidt’s into one enormous ice luge shot bar? It’s definitely a big idea, but…
We had a fair amount of brainpower poured into this final round of our little win-free-tickets-to-ThinkFest game. Some ideas were good. Some ideas were…not (seriously, frozen beer foam DOES NOT TASTE GOOD. I don’t care what they do in Japan). But in the end, there could be only one.
The winner, right this way

Philadelphia magazine’s ThinkFest is coming up this weekend, and in order to get you all in an innovative frame of mind, we’ve decided to give away another pair of tickets for Saturday’s big-brain hootenanny at the Rittenhouse Hotel.
Because we’ve got a large and distinguished group of food people taking part in this year’s discussion (Stephen Starr is the Friday night keynote speaker, after all), for round one of the contest, I asked for your best food and/or restaurant brainstorms–the Big Ideas that would re-shape Philly and move it boldly into the future at the forefront of the food world.
This time, though–in honor of the Foobooz Top 50 Bars list released yesterday and the various beer and liquor smarties taking part in ThinkFest–we’re going in the other direction. This time, I want your Big Booze Ideas…

As we mentioned yesterday, Philadelphia magazine’s ThinkFest is coming to town on November 30 and December 1 and with it, we’re bringing together some of the finest minds in the Philly food scene to talk about the past, the present and the future of food in Philadelphia.
We’ve got Stephen Starr coming in as our keynote speaker on Friday night, offering a candid interview about his years in the restaurant industry. On Saturday, Bill Covaleski and Tom Kehoe–the owners of Victory Brewing and Yards Brewing–will be talking about beer in Philadelphia. And then, later the same day, Aimee Olexy, Michael Solomonov, Brad Spence and Marcie Turney will be sitting down to talk about Philadelphia’s evolving food scene. All of these people are innovators. All of them bring big ideas to the city. All of them put their names, their money and their reputations on the line to make Philly the food town it is.
And we want to send you to the event for free. All you have to do to score a pair of tickets? Have one really good idea for the future of food in Philly…
