Joe said to tell you that we plan to open in a few days. That’s what Joe Grasso’s assistant told me in mid-November, when I called Grasso to find out why his $12 million steakhouse Union Trust had closed. But here it is a few weeks later, and the situation has gone from bad to worse.

“Lots of eye-rolling went on back in 2008 and 2009 when Philadelphia saw a trifecta of grand steakhouses opening in a city (and nation) on the verge of economic disaster: Stephen Starr’s Butcher & Singer, Dallas-based chain Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, and the $12 million locally-owned Union Trust on Washington Square West. As for Union Tavern in the former Roy’s on 15th Street, Union Trust General Manager Xavier Mariezcurrena tells us the new project will open sooner than expected.

Aloha means goodbye. And it is goodbye for Roy’s at 15th and Sansom. Coming in will be a new concept run by Ed Doherty of Union Trust and backed by the Grasso brothers. It’ll be a reunion of sorts for the Grassos as they went separate ways in steakhouses. Joe is a part-owner of Union Trust and David owns the Grande building that houses Del Frisco’s. [The Insider]
