Del Frisco’s Bought Over $1 Million In Wine and Booze Last Year

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 14th, 2013

del-friscos-philadelphia

We were impressed back in October 2012 when we learned that Center City red meat emporium Del Frisco’s had purchased nearly $900,000 worth of wine and spirits through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board the year prior. But in our most recent report, Del Frisco’s (and two other spots) break the $1 million mark.

Union Trust Steakhouse Is Falling Apart

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 13th, 2013

UnionTrustWarning

And in this case, we mean that literally. Apparently, the building (which housed Union Trust right up until it closed late last year) is shedding pieces of its fascade all over Chestnut Street. And as HughE Dillon is reporting over on Philly Chit Chat, the situation has gotten to the point where the city has wrapped the sidewalk in yellow tape and slapped up one of those not-good-news orange signs saying, essentially, that someone has got to fix this mess right quick or the whole joint is gonna get knocked down.

The clock is currently ticking. If repairs aren’t made by March 6, the city has the right to tear the entire historic building down.

U.S. Government Moves to Liquidate Union Trust

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on December 6th, 2012

Joe said to tell you that we plan to open in a few days. That’s what Joe Grasso’s assistant told me in mid-November, when I called Grasso to find out why his $12 million steakhouse Union Trust had closed. But here it is a few weeks later, and the situation has gone from bad to worse.

Without a Liquor License, Union Trust Closes

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on November 15th, 2012

It has been twenty months since the $12 million Union Trust declared bankruptcy, with owner Joe Grasso telling me on more than one occasion since that business at the steakhouse is good. But today, as the case continues to wind its way through bankruptcy court, the doors are closed. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Foobooz on April 12th, 2012

Whether they’re from the Jersey shore to British Columbia, Philadelphia loves slurping down oysters. And we’re particularly excited to eat them for buck-a-shuck oyster happy hours.

Here are six spots where dollar oysters happen just about every day.

Our New Friends At Union Trust Want You To Know About Their Oysters And Sancerre Event

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 4th, 2011

Apparently the folks at Union Trust aren’t all that upset at us for our reporting on their “restructuring”. (By the way, it turns out that the whole civil suit thing in Montco got tossed.) We just got an invitation to what sounds like a delightful event this Friday that they’re throwing for the winemakers and wine drinkers in town for our Wine Festival. Read the rest of this entry »

Greatest Hits And What You Missed: Burgers, Butter, Bankruptcy and Nuclear Tuna

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 8th, 2011

“Lots of eye-rolling went on back in 2008 and 2009 when Philadelphia saw a trifecta of grand steakhouses opening in a city (and nation) on the verge of economic disaster: Stephen Starr’s Butcher & Singer, Dallas-based chain Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, and the $12 million locally-owned Union Trust on Washington Square West. Well, Starr slid right through the mess, as he tends to do. And though Del Frisco’s has had its share of problems (unpaid bills and the hilarious dumpster wars, for instance) and rumors of its demise pop up now and again, it seems to have weathered the storm. But Union Trust has not been so lucky.”

From “Union Trust Files For Bankruptcy,” just the start of a saga that promises to drag on for a good, long time.

Shakeup at Union Trust

Posted by Foobooz on September 21st, 2010

We have received word that Ed Doherty is out from the day-to-day operations at Union Trust and will not be involved in the forthcoming Union Tavern project . Doherty still holds his interest  in Union Trust and is pursuing consulting opportunities.

As for Union Tavern in the former Roy’s on 15th Street, Union Trust General Manager Xavier Mariezcurrena tells us the new project will open sooner than expected.

Quick Bites

Aloha means goodbye. And it is goodbye for Roy’s at 15th and Sansom. Coming in will be a new concept run by Ed Doherty of Union Trust and backed by the Grasso brothers. It’ll be a reunion of sorts for the Grassos as they went separate ways in steakhouses. Joe is a part-owner of Union Trust and David owns the Grande building that houses Del Frisco’s. [The Insider]
