Del Frisco’s Bought Over $1 Million In Wine and Booze Last Year

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 14th, 2013

del-friscos-philadelphia

We were impressed back in October 2012 when we learned that Center City red meat emporium Del Frisco’s had purchased nearly $900,000 worth of wine and spirits through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board the year prior. But in our most recent report, Del Frisco’s (and two other spots) break the $1 million mark.

Vetri Raises Tasting Menu Price

Posted by Foobooz on July 16th, 2012

A Chowhound posted that Vetri’s tasting menu will go be going up from $135 to $155 per person in September. As was noted, the increase puts Vetri’s price to just north of Le Bec Fin 2.0′s $150 prix fixe.

We found cwdonald’s analysis to be quite astute.

So Basically what we have here is the best restaurant in Philadelphia saying that they deserve to charge the most… I doubt this will hurt their business, and it allows them to “keep” their position, signaled by price, as the best restaurant in the city, (whether it is deserved is a matter of debate of course) but economists agree that price is often a signal of perceived quality. In the drug industry for example we launch drugs and the price selection relative to products on the market suggests value. If a new product comes out equal or less, it is often perceived as less valuable. Vetri is just saying it is as good as the new kid on the block, LBF v2.

James Beard Awards: Finalists (And Journalists) Announced

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 19th, 2012

Okay, so for those of you of a mind to party on James Beard Awards night (May 7th for the chef awards, May 4th for the journalism awards–the Science & Tech Oscars of the food world), it’s going to be very easy for you to root for the home team this year. Why? Because Philadelphia pretty much fell off the map between the announcement of the semi-finalists and this afternoon’s reveal of the finalists.

While we were looking pretty good going into the big dance with 19 potential nominees (including Tashan, Franklin Mortgage, Standard Tap, Vetri, Pierre Calmels, Marcie Turney, Joe Cicala, Lee Styer, Jessie Prawlucki and others), the only local names that made it into the finals were…

Philadelphia’s 2012 James Beard Award Nominees

Outstanding Restaurant: Vetri

Outstanding Wine, Beer or Spirits Professional: Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head

Television Program, On Location: A Taste Of History, Walter Staib

Food Culture and Travel: Jason Sheehan (writing for Gilt Taste) “The Birth Of The Atomic Cheeseburger

Posted by Foobooz on February 21st, 2012

The 2012 James Beard Semifinalists have been announced and Philadelphia area chefs and restaurants seem to have a bigger representation than normal. Tashan, The Farm and Fisherman and Zeppoli all make the list for Best New Restaurant. Pierre Calmels, BibouDavid Gilberg, Koo Zee DooKonstantinos Pitsillides, Kanella and Marcie Turney of Barbuzzo all make the semifinals for Best Chef Midatlantic (remember, past winners aren’t eligible).

Le Virtu’s Joe Cicala and Fond’s Lee Styer were nominated for Rising Star Chef, while Jessie Prawlucki (Fond/Belle Cakery) made the list for Outstanding Pastry Chef. Not bad East Passyunk, not bad at all.

Bells Ring for Five

Posted by Foobooz on February 4th, 2012

Every time you hear a bell ring, it means that some angel’s just got his wings.

Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Two quotes about bells, that sum up two distinctly different reactions to Craig LaBan’s resetting of the eating landscape in the region.
