Kris Restaurant Has Closed, Paper Up in the Windows at Village Belle

Posted by Foobooz on April 2nd, 2013

Kris Restaurant has closed, hand is now becoming part of the Munish Narula empire. The restaurant’s Facebook page says that all gift certificates will be honored at owner Kristian Leuzzi’s, Stogie Joe’s on East Passyunk.

Also in South Philadelphia, paper is up in the windows at Queen Village’s Village Belle and no online reservations are available before Friday, April 5th.

Lou Campanaro, chef/owner of the Village Belle tells us it’s some spring cleaning that will include a new look for the bar and prep work for the outdoor cafe.

Campanaro also tells us the menu is being reformatted to focus on small plates with small prices. The wine and cocktail lists are also being revamped and four new taps are being added.

Village Belle is aiming to reopen this Thursday or Friday and will have Allagash White, Victory Swing Sesion Saison, Goose Island IPA and Flying Fish Farmhouse Ale on tap.

Belles at Belle Tonight at the Village Belle

Posted by Alex Tewfik on December 21st, 2012

A conversation through Instagram can go a long way. Amongst the sea of apetails, Chefs Christina Martin (Vedge, Village Belle & Blackfish) and Jennifer Choplin (Watkins Drinkery, Butcher & the Brewer) have decided, through Instagramial conversation, to throw a holiday bash for the female professionals in the industry. The wittily dubbed Belles at Belle is a celebration in honor of females in Philly’s restaurant scene. Admission is free, it starts at 9pm, and it’ll be at the Village Belle on Front Street in South Philly. Louis Campanaro, Village Belle’s executive chef, is hosting the event, and has made ready some food specials and a DJ.

Gentlemen, you’re welcome to join if you’re in the industry, and if you are—well, let’s just say you’re lucky, because if the party is a success, Jennifer and Christina hope to make them a regular event for ladies in the industry.

Midtown Lunch pops into Old City’s Wedge + Fig for the Svenson, Nova lox, sprouts and lemon-dill creme fraiche on pumpernickel bread. It was gluttonous euphoria. [Midtown Lunch]

Shucking (And Boozing) For “Behind Belle’s Bar” Happy Hour

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 29th, 2011

Got plans for tomorrow night? If you like meat rocks and bubbly wine, you do now.

On Thursday, June 30, Village Belle (which critic Trey Popp reviewed rather harshly back in February of this year)  is throwing their second “Behind Belle’s Bar” happy hour, this time featuring Lisa Tiscavitch, a sales rep for Samuels & Son Seafood Co. who is also some kind of oyster expert–which she’ll be proving by standing behind the bar and shucking alongside the regular crew while handing down bits of oyster lore and knowledge to the assembled crowds.

The night’s list will be an East Coast/West Coast showdown, with Cape May Salts, Blue Points and Beau Soleil representing the local bounty and Kumamoto, Effingham and Drunken Kiss standing up for the Left Coast. Tiscavitch will be there to explain the differences between species. There’ll also be cold prosecco, specialty cocktails and (of course) discount prices on the bivalves. The shucking gets under way at 6pm and will be done by 9pm, so go early and go hungry.

White Dog Wayne and Village Belle Reviewed

Posted by Kirsten Henri on February 25th, 2011

Trey Popp ventures to the new White Dog Cafe on the Main Line, but not before recalling a less-than-stellar experience at the pre-Marty Grims version of the University City location.

The first meal I ever ate in Philadelphia taught me a lesson that I probably could have gleaned, at deep discount, from the dietary journals of Mohandas Gandhi: Social activism is a poor indicator of good cooking. It was at the White Dog Cafe in the 21st year of Judy Wicks’s reign as the gustatory conscience of West Philly, and the only thing sadder than my ham-handed fish fillet was the fact that I’d abandoned the culinary utopia of northern California to get it. But the worst part was that I required a second session for the lesson to sink in — during which a sinewy piece of flavorless strip steak got lodged in my esophagus for half an hour. “Attention!” I tried to shout. “Does anyone here have an endoscope? Or a toilet snake?!”

Village Belle Praised

Posted by Foobooz on January 6th, 2011

Adam Erace reviews Queen Village’s Village Belle and declares the Italian restaurant’s tomato sauce to be as good as his grandmother’s. Sacrilege!

My ideal meal at Village Belle would be built around pasta and starters, because so many are so great — husky escarole soup with mini versions of those meatballs; a “napoleon” of red beets and chèvre served with crisp, balsamic-anointed arugula; calamari, either fried or poached with shrimp and scallops for a lemon-y seafood salad tangled with lollo rosso lettuce. And plenty of the house-baked caramelized-onion focaccia, of course.
