Marigold Kitchen Does Away with A La Carte

Posted by Foobooz on January 25th, 2013

Beginning this weekend Marigold Kitchen is doing away with a la carte ordering. From now on you can create your own tasting menus of 4, 5 or 6 courses (plus the parade of amuse bouches). The price starts at $65 per person and goes up from there. Prix fixe has been the way to go at Marigold anyway, but now it’s the only way. We’re just glad they didn’t heed Philadelphia magazine’s note that if Marigold were in New York, it would easily be $150 per head.

Adam Erace Reviews West Philly’s Rue 52

Posted by Foobooz on January 25th, 2013

Mahari Bailey hopes her coffee-and-crepes spot, Rue 52 can aid in the revitalization of 52nd Street in West Philadelphia. Adam Erace stops in to check out the crepes.

Despite Rue’s thematic Francophilia (hours listed bilingually, a Tumblr billed “nouvelles”), the crêpes are not so true to form, based on the same batter for both sweet and savory versions and overstuffed to American portions. That said, crêpes are like pizza in that even an average one is still pretty great, and Rue’s proved no exception. The classic trifecta of Nutella, bananas and strawberries (the Ben Franklin) absolves all wrongdoing in its warm, gooey embrace. Apples and caramel had the same effect, and were surprisingly less sweet than you’d think.

It’s Confirmed: Shake Shack to University City

Posted by Foobooz on January 24th, 2013

Shake Shack is indeed coming to University City. Danny Meyer’s burger chain will be an anchor tenant of Drexel’s Chestnut Square complex, under construction on the 3200 block of Chestnut. It is the second Shake Shack for Philadelphia, succeeding the always crowded location at 20th and Sansom.

Burgers should be pumping out of the kitchen by the time Drexel rolls back to school in the fall of 2013.

Is Shake Shack Opening In University City?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 23rd, 2013

That’s what the rumor-mill is churning out today. According to the Insider, a Drexel campus location for Shake Shack seems most likely–which will no doubt set off a battle between Drexel and Penn burger fanatics. But honestly, who cares? Though the best possible location would be directly next door to my house, there really is no bad place for a 2nd Shake Shack. Every additional location just means more tasty cheeseburgers in Philly–a development I am fully in favor of.

UPDATE: It’s confirmed, Shake Shack is going in at 32nd and Chestnut.

Calling All Food Trucks, Porch Expanding Vending

Posted by Alex Tewfik on January 17th, 2013

UCD-Porch-July-11-2012-065_3

Imagine a venue with great food, high traffic, ample space, an outdoor patio, and magnificent views of the city skyline and river. A place like that is an impossible find, it’s an ideal to most restaurateurs, and one that’s usually only found in their imaginations. It exists, though, and it’s looking to be filled.

University City District and The Porch at 30th Street is calling all vendors, all mobile eateries, all meals on wheels, to be a part of their  upcoming season, to up the ante on a property that has completely revamped itself from a place that once was just a bunch of parking spots. Last year, those that parked at the Porch found themselves in a very lucrative position, both physically and financially. Once a week, in only three hours, 2-4 trucks sold over 250 meals—those are busy-restaurant numbers.
