Philly Beer Week Collab Features Best Beer Label Ever

Posted by Foobooz on May 2nd, 2013

manneken-Penn

Philly Beer Week runs a yearly “Win a Trip to Belgium” event for local beer lovers. This year the winner was Matt Hohorst, who along with Weyerbacher head brewer, Chris Wilson and Tom Peters of Monk’s Cafe went to Brasserie de la Senne in Brussels to brew this year’s collaborative brew. What the returned with is Manneken-Penn, a Belgian-American Dubbel with an undoubtedly great label. Merging the famous Mannekin-Pis in Brussels with the William Penn statue on City Hall, this label is just awesome.

The first time the public will have a chance to try Manneken-Penn will be on Friday, May 31, at Opening Tap.

About Last Night: Philly Beer Scene Award Winners

Posted by Tara Nurin on May 23rd, 2012

Okay, so no matter how strident were the requests that attendees treat last night’s Philly Beer Scene “Best Of” Awards like they were the Grammies, Tom Kehoe still didn’t wear a tie. But Jose Pistola’s owner Joe Gunn wore a tux, and Best Brewmaster nominee Chris LaPierre sported an outlandish Western shirt, jacket and bolo at the first-ever Philly Beer Scene public awards ceremony. The recommended black-tie attire for the red carpet-style affair allowed the who’s-who of the local beer and bar scene to dress up for one another in sometimes tongue-in-cheek fashion. The merriment was palpable as brewers, bar and homebrew shop owners, sales reps, journalists, distributor employees and drinkers came together Downstairs at World Café Live to get photographed and interviewed on the red carpet (interviews courtesy of Suzy Woods) and cheer one another and the community as a whole.

Who won what?

Looking for something to do this evening? We recommend checking out the With Love Beer Garden at the Four Seasons. It’s a lovely grassy area from which to enjoy a featured beer (tonight it is Weyerbacher) and further plan your night of Beer Week.

Or take a flyer on one of our Beer Week flyers for June 7th.

Extreme Beers, Extremely Local

Posted by Kirsten Henri on January 9th, 2008

In an article in the New York Times dining section today, two local brews are awarded the top two positions in an ‘extreme beer’ tasting:

Our favorite was the robust 90 Minute Imperial I.P.A. from Dogfish Head, a beer that balances its exaggerated caramel and chocolate sweetness with a bracing bitterness derived from hops. If you sneer at the 90 Minute, Dogfish also occasionally issues its 120 Minute I.P.A., which, at 20 percent alcohol, may well be, as the brewery contends, “the biggest I.P.A. ever brewed.”

Our No. 2 beer, the Weyerbacher Double Simcoe I.P.A., seemed to embody the term “killer,” the extreme beer fan’s favorite compliment. Killer hops, killer fruit, overwhelming yet bearable, even enjoyable, because it is so well balanced.

Aw, we’re so proud of our local brewers, extreme and otherwise.
