Best of Philly: This Is What 400 People Eating Cupcakes Looks Like

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 4th, 2012

Over the weekend, we had a gigantic public tasting for this year’s Best of Philly issue. The challenge? Pick the best cupcake in Philadelphia. And our methods were simple: Set up the tables at King Of Prussia Mall, bring in the cupcakes and let the people just go NUTS.

Our five competitors (a list curated by Foobooz and Philadelphia magazine staff) were Whipped Bakeshop, Cups ‘n Cakes, Colonial Farms, Philly Cupcake and Brown Betty and our voter turn-out levels were high (with something like 90% of all people sampling casting an actual vote for their favorite), which leads me to believe that American Democracy might work a whole hell of a lot better if all elections were done in the form of cupcake taste-tests.

But anyway, the votes have all been counted. A clear winner has been chosen. And the people’s choice for Best Cupcake In Philly will be revealed come August when Best of Philly 2012 hits the stands.

Fishtown Pop-Up At Cook, In Pictures

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 17th, 2012

The Italians invented foie gras. The Italians taught the Chinese everything they know about cooking. Cooking is all about love, but if you don’t like chicken livers you should just stab yourself in the leg.

This is just a tiny piece of the kitchen wisdom offered up by Peter McAndrews when he and his posse–including Nate Baynes, Jerry Blavat (yeah, that one), and a quiet, mysterious fella called Doc Razor–stepped behind the line at Cook for our Fishtown pop-up on Wednesday night. It was weird. It was wild. And yes, we have pictures.

Cookies From Deion Sanders, Via Whipped Bakeshop

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 7th, 2012

We got Deion Sanders cookies from Whipped Bakeshop (as featured in this weekend’s Super Bowl ad for Century 21)!

Are you jealous? Well you should be. Because while we briefly though about keeping the cookie forever as a kind of weird souvenir of the sort of fleeting fame that can come and go without anyone but some food nerd website noticing, Art and I were both kinda hungry, so we just ate it.

And Deion was delicious.
