Royal Sushi and Izakaya Has a Home

As Michael Klein reported last night Royal Sushi and Izakaya finally has a location. The anticipated Japanese bar from the RoyalKhyberCantinasandnowIzakaya team will be opening in September at 782 S 2nd Street. Philadelphia food nerds have been coveting a true izakaya for years now and as the Khyber Pass Pub’s pop-up proved, there is demand.

Chef Todd Dae Kulper who quickly gathered praise at the short-lived Ro-Zu will be in the kitchen of RS&K.

The building at 2nd and Fulton has been owned by Stephen Simons and company for several years and when the neighborhood steakhouse concept, the Grill Room couldn’t make a go of it they decided to locate the business there. The building is a bit bigger than the Khyber and will afford them the opportunity to do both pub food and sushi.

As for whether there will be another pop-up prior to Royal Sushi and Izakaya opening it isn’t so clear. Simons says they have one planned but with a tight September deadline things could change.

      I’ve been to Japan quite a few times. I’d love for there to be an izakaya here in Philadelphia, and I think one would do quite well (assuming the PLCB is cooperative enough to actually allow for the import of some decent sakes and sh?ch?s into the city at a reasonable price). However, if the picture here is representative of the new venue, we’re not getting the real deal.       The real-deal izakayas you went to in Japan didn’t have karaage or gyoza? Or any green vegetables?

      It should be remembered that the restaurant is also on Fulton Street, which is totally residential and my home is directly across the street, so it is very important that this restaurant and its workers, owners and customers keep that in mind in the event they have outdoor seating on Fulton. I sincerely hope that they dont, it is not necessary for good food and a good time, but if they do, courtesy to the residents is important.

      Jane, when you bought/rented across the street from a restaurant space, didn’t that factor in to your decision? Didn’t you think that one day it might re-open or change concepts, and might have outdoor seating, or late activity?

      if real deal izikaya’s menus are only in japanese, i’ll take this shitty knock off. did i have to know you’ve been to japan for that complaint?

      Mike: Of course I knew there was a restaurant across from me when I moved in. It was called LaGrolla and they were great. Joe used to come over with a plate of home-made pasta. They did not have seating outdoors. My concern is that the area that could be used for the outdoor seating is across from my home and that the noise of people having fun, drinking and eating, and so they should have fun when they are out to eat, But, again,I know noise carries, cause I clearly hear the kids when they go talking down the street. I have no doubt that this will be a great restaurant, I just don’t want outdoor seating, poeple right below my bedroom window.

      Sorry. I didn’t even answer your question! No, it never occurred to me that it would ever have outdoor seating. Why would it? I am not a restaurant person. I do not fortell the future, how could I. I bought my home before it became a “thing” to have outdoor seating and/or seating on the sidewalks. Fulton Street will not accommodate sidewalk seating, I am quite certain. I don’t see why an area can’t be arranged that is nice enough to have it all inside. So, there you go. I t never occurred to me, I was just so excited to have my own home.
