Live from Shake Shack

Posted by Foobooz on June 6th, 2012

Here’s the log of our live stream of opening day of Shake Shack in Philadelphia. The people kept coming and the team at Shake Shack kept serving them. A big thank you to the staff of Capogiro for putting up with our shenanigans.

Shake Shack Menu
Shake Shack on Foobooz

3:02 p.m. We’ve concluded our day of live blogging the opening of Shake Shack.
2:34 p.m. OK, maybe we’re not calling it quits right now. The battery is strong in the iPad.
2:30 p.m. We’re calling it quits for the day. Capogiro gelato coma in full effect. Line is moving swiftly now. Shout out to the Tinto kitchen staff that is making Shake Shack their staff meal today.
2:13 p.m. Shortest line of the day right now at Shake Shack.
1:43 p.m. We’ve run down the battery on three iOS devices so far today. But we couldn’t have done it without Apple products.
1:35 p.m. Line is getting longer again.
1:32 p.m. The dulces de leche, bacio gelato has been housed. Capogiro also is scooping a Victory Yakima Glory gelato for Beer Week.
1:17 p.m. Line is shortening. Looks like 15 minutes outside wait right now.
1:12 p.m. For those dying to know. Five people in the Signha House line. Outside tables available at Village Whiskey.
12:53 p.m. Jason spoke with the kitchen manager who was hanging out across the street. Says things are going well. They’re expecting a lull around 3 p.m.
12:44 p.m. Line is still note extending beyond the second doors. We’ve been measuring that as 20 minute long line to get inside. Figure another 10-15 minutes from there.
12:43 p.m. Hey it’s Pete from the coffee shop! Hi Pete.
12:37 p.m. Jason Sheehan breaks down and orders the first gelato of the day. Dulce de Leche.
12:35 p.m.Hey blondie, move!
12:33 p.m. Pumpkin’s Ian Maroney spotted in line. Chefs are celebs, at least to us. Speaking of real celebs, we saw Claude Giroux at the opening party last night.
12:25 p.m. Looks like those dark clouds are just that. Weather.com showing no precipitation in the area.
12:22 p.m. Are there more photos being taken today at 20th and Sansom than at the Liberty Bell?
12:20 p.m. Clouds are looking kind of ominous in the west.
12:09 p.m.Chorizo panini has been ordered here at Capogiro. Can’t say no to chorizo.
12:05 p.m. Minor technical glitch solved (dead batteries), so now we’re back on the air, live from Capogiro at 20th and Sansom.
12:01 p.m. The line is shortening slightly, but the noon lunch rush is coming. If you’re hungry, this is going to be your best shot for a while.
11:52 a.m. The line is now approximately 75 people long.
11:50 a.m. The red-headed woman who we marked at the end of the line at 11:30 is now about to go in the front door.
11:41 a.m. The line now extends the length of the building.
11:30 a.m. We spot the first customers of the day heading into Village Whiskey. They were promptly seated.
11:27 a.m. Parking Authority walks by this corner every two minutes or so.
11:24 a.m. Group we saw enter after the initial rush have left with their takeout. 20 minutes from front door to getting you order.
11:22 a.m. We’re broadcasting live from the window at Capogiro. We’d like to thank our hosts for putting up with us using their bandwidth. Did you know Capogiro offers fresh squeezed OJ?
11:18 a.m. Shake Shack is keeping pace with the line. It’s about 43 people deep outside.
11:05 a.m. Occasional Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Rick Nichols makes it to the front of the door.
8:30 a.m. First people arrive in line.
9:45 a.m. 28 people in line.
11:00 a.m. Doors open. First fifteen or so enter Shake Shack.

Nice! You should do this permanently and add a link to the Shake Shack cam at the top of the home page.

    • barryg

Capogiro is underrated as a cafe.

    • diParma

Now this is great food reporting! And I agree with Tex, at least set up shop at Capogiro for opening month. I’m sure they’d be OK with it.

    • Sarah

      Couldn’t agree more, Barryg!

    • Mike

Seriously? I mean, they’re decent burgers, but there’s burgers.org right around the corner, and a few blocks away you can find 500 Degrees and 5 Guys.

    • http://www.twitter.com/leeanneeats LeeAnne

This is one of the best things I have ever seen on Foobooz, all kidding aside.

    • Jimmy

Can I have my barber back?

    • SG

      burger.org is ???
they just opened in Margate and they are closed on Fri and Sat. Can someone say “STUPID?!?”
I know they are trying to cater to the Jewish crowd, but most jews aren’t kosher, and if you aren’t open on Fri and Sat in the summer down the shore, then you are doomed to fail. And does anyone ever go into the location in CC?

Shake Shack will affect 5 guys.

Shake Shack will not affect 500 degrees

    • thetruth

      Hey jimmy,

your barber works across the street now.

    • Jimmy

@Thetruth – I haven’t had the courage to walk inside “The March Hair.”

    • thetruth

oh and you cant even get a cheeseburger at burger.org so no thanks.

    • ASKme

@Mike – The burgers are way better than just ‘decent’… if you want a burger that highlights the beef as the star of the show, Shake Shack wins out over burgers.org, Five Guys or 500 Degrees hands down. The efficiency at which they produce a consistent, tasty burger is also second to none. The customer service at Five Guys and 500 Degrees is spotty at best.

    • Mike

more talking about how people are lining up here, when there’s other good burgers very close. Shake Shack is good stuff, but in the end it’s just another upmarket fast food burger.

    • Tex

We haven’t had anything like Shake Shack. It’s like a better version of In-n-Out or Steak and Shake. Five Guys, etc. pale by comparison, and Squareburger has never come close.

    • Phoodie Pathos

Just when I thought the whole foodie fetish ridiculousness couldn’t reach a more pathetic level…tadah! You live blog the opening of a burger restaurant.

Doughnuts. Fried Chicken. Cocktails circa 1992 in Chinatown. Now Shake Shack.

David Cross said it best: We have become a nation of 5 year olds.

      Pathetic.

    • Nah

This won’t be necessary after a week. 50% of the people in line in NYC are tourists, and most of our tourists have no reason to go to this part of town.

Once the excitement dies down, the line will be long, but not require a camera. It’s fun for the first few days though. Also, a camera is only really useful to those who are within a block or two, as the line can get huge out of nowhere.

And I think Capogiro would have a problem with them setting up shop to basically advertise other people’s ice cream-ish products.

    • Joanna B

I braved the line around 12:30. From stepping in line to food in hand, 30 minutes. Not bad at all.

Burger and fries were excellent. Employees were super friendly and helpful. They forgot my fries on my order and added them in with no extra wait.

It’s definitely better than Five Guys. Will be back for sure.

Did I read this right? Kitchen manager hanging out across the street on opening day?

My Gootness! If an In-N-Out Burger were Ever to open up in Philadelphia, your heads would explode! Like Seinfeld says, ‘It’s Not what’s on, it’s what’s on Next!’ Like Chris Christie and the Lamestream Press ‘Will he or won’t he?’
Next up–Papaya King. BTW-did Anyone have a ‘shake’? I understand it’s in their name. Why no photographs of Inside the Shake Shack?
      Folks, theys only burgers.

As Public Enemy so eloquently put it ‘Don’t Believe The Hype.’

What happened to the peep SHOW????

    • Thugs

Dougherty, it’s my opinion your thugs are what’s wrong with Philly. Your overpriced tactics sink a restaurant before it even opens. You are no friend of the hospitality industry. Go spread your communism on another blog.

    • Loserville

Hey Johnny Doc, why aren’t you eating from the
      same trough as Vinnie?
Go shtup B.O. in your Union Bath House.

    • Rob

$9.75 for a double cheesburger and fries? It’s a good burger, having had the Madison Square version multiple times, but damn that’s expensive for a burger and shake joint. If In-N-Out Burger ever landed in Philly (and that will never happen as they are a “regional” thing) they would blow-up the burger scene. That said, if Charlies would ever open a second location (to their backwater location down in Folsom) downtown….it quite possibly would do the same thing, and only cost 2.65…although, they don’t do fries there.

    • John

IN-N-OUT is horribly overrated. I can name at least a dozen places that make a better burger in Philly than that place.

    • barryg

Check out the nutrition info for Shake Shack… the burgers illegally contain trans fats.

    • Joe K

@BarryG: directly from Philadelphia’s “Complying with the Philadelphia Trans Fat Ban” publication (http://www.phila.gov/health/pdfs/Trans_Fat.pdf):

What about butter, beef tallow, suet, and lard?
These highly saturated fats are not covered by the regulation because they contain only
naturally occurring (not artificial) trans fats.

    • barryg

Yep you are right–naturally occurring. Still high for a 1/4lb burger, guess they use a high-fat blend.
